Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

the Toshiba notebooks are not great for videocard upgrades... since they are not standard.

I believe the X205 can only go up to Nvidia 8700M GT.

well that's really dissapointing. Great! Now I'm screwed, will have to play Empire Total War on low settings....If I wanted to upgrade the CPU in it, which one would you recommend?

you have some options for CPU.

the x205 is using a Intel Santa Rosa platform.
    - any of the mobile Core 2 Duo with 800MHz FSB should work.

the fastest being the T9500 and the X9000.

    - here is a list of mobile Core 2 Duo's (any of the 800MHz ones should work in your system fine)

Although now you can get a notebook that is fully loaded with a high-end Nvidia 9800M for under $1000... which would outperform that system of your by over two times.

whats the best gaming desktop for $1000? Also, couldn't I get a higher processor speed with a higher FSB? The 1066 FSB just wpoudln't be taken advantage of, right?

that would be the ASUS G50VT
... at BestBuy for under $1000

    Nope thats not the reason.

Its your system's mobile platform (chipset driven) that does not support those CPUs.

Your system is the previous generation mobile Intel Santa Rosa platform... with PM965 chipset.
    - limited to 800MHz FSB CPUs
    - limited to DDR2-667

the latest Intel Centrino 2 (Montevina) platform.... with PM45 chipset.
    - supports 1066MHz CPUs.... and up to mobile quad-core CPUs
    - supports up to DDR2-800 or on some system DDR3-1066

The higher you could go is 8600m GT SLI... I can play Empire Total War all high (not very high) at ~40 fps (60 fps all medium) with my SLI1... And that's with a 2.0 Core 2 Duo...

However i don't think the upgrade is worth it... You could buy a better new pc for around the same money... Those 8600m GT must be around 600~700$ if you find them (EBAY)...

almost worthless to SLI two mid-range cards.... since a single 9800M will beat it.

Yep. That should be the fastest CPU your laptop can support.

They (X9000 cpus) are all the same right? I can just go on ebay and buy an Intel X9000 cpu and it will work in my laptop right?

yes the X9000 should work in your system, but hopefully your system's cooling can handle it.

If you are unsure, go one step down to the T9500.

    here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81852

checking on your system, a number of people have used the X9000 in the x205... so it should be ok... but a waste since you wont be able to overclock it... which is why there is a price premium for that CPU.

Yeah, temp wise you should be fine... but, it is a very involved process of upgrading, involving taking apart the entire laptop. Search the Toshiba forum, as I posted a lot about my upgrade process. Good luck!

Yeah, upgrading the cpu is no joke, you really have to to take everything apart!

I upgraded mine last year, at this point in time I would look into a new pc, instead of upgrading.
