Its been a week since I started playing the War Rock Beta. So far, I'm incredibly impressed. The game engine manages to dish out decent graphics even on my low spec system (Turion X2, X1100). I have experienced little to no lag which is a big contrast to when I played BF2142 (or even the lowly Wolfenstein: ET for that matter) for some reason (maybe due to more efficient game engine?); gameplay is perfectly smooth. There's also a nice addition of rag-doll physics in this game - its fun watching a player get blown into the air by a tank and come down with limbs twisted in akward positions.
Now about the game thus far. War Rock features 3 main game modes. The first is a mission mode in which one teams tries to plant a bomb, while the other tries to disarm it. The second is a classic deathmatch suprisingly similar to BF2142's capture the base mode. Minimal veichles are available on this mid-sized game map. The last mode takes place on enourmous maps. The same deathmatch rules apply but with the addition of more veichles - tanks, motorbikes, humvees, jets, bombers, choppers, gun boats etc.
So far there are about 20 or so different weapons. Your character comes with the standard equipment for each class - engineer, medic, scout, combatant, heavy weapons. In order to purchase better weapons, you have to earn points during games; however, if you disconnect from the server before the game is over, you may lose points. Weapons are for lease for up to 30 days; for the most expensive weapons, this amounts to about 11-15K. A competent player should be able to earn around 100-200p per game (depending on game mode). If you want to upgrade faster, you can pay with real cash (not available in beta). The addition of custom outfits is expected in the final version of the game.
In respect to ranking, War Rock offers an incredible number of different ranks from PFC to General. Advancing in the ranks takes quite a bit of effort. A lot of wins are required to quickly advance to the next rank. Your status is displayed in both the in-game scoreboard and menu HUD and is represented by a percentage (99% meaning you are 1% from the next rank).
In addition, there is a Free For All tournament which is ongoing. Players must register for a slot and show up for their match. Prizes are handed out to the top players by ATI. They include many ATI graphic cards and such. Also, a new weapon, the winchestor, is a FFA tournament only weapon.
Still, there are quite a few bugs which I expect to be fixed before the final release. There is still the constant problem of spawnkilling (although, like in most online fps, you are temporarily shielded from damage as you spawn) and cheap weapons (a player with a panzer is too powerful in my opinion). Game mode could use some tweaks to make them less repetitive and more interesting.
So if you're too poor to purchase BF2 or 2142 or are just looking for a free low-req first person shoots, you could do a lot worse. This game is listed in the top 50 hottest games according to the site, and presently, I agree.

Lol, I played that game quite a while ago (6 months or so ago) probably longer, and it was pretty fun. Of course I only played the beta, and haven't played it since then, but I'm wondering what has been improved since like half a year ago lol.

    Meh, I tried that game.

It was ok, but its way too arcade for my tastes and I dont like the renting guns idea.

Great game, although not as good as BF2. Yeah, I know its free, but I'd rather pay for BF2 then play War Rock for free!

Particularly great though if your machine cannot run BF2.

I tried it a while back. It's a nice concept, but for more powerful machines, it feels very lacking and unadvanced. However, I guess people with really weak machines can revel in it, since they got something like Battlefield to play.

Sorry I haven't played AA yet. Respawns (after you get killed) only take 10 sec, unless you're playing ing mission mode where you'll respawn at the end of the 3 min round. Plenty of servers in my opinion - American, Canadian German, Spanish servers etc.

fear combat while it looks much better is lacking in the gameplay stakes....it felt a lot like HL2 deathmatch... so meh

Dont really like the maps...they just seemed too mazelike to me, little variety in weapons although the unarmed attack is nice. Too much spawnkilling (no spawn protection) RTCW:ET is much better imo... Fear combat doesnt do anything that HL2 cant do 5x better

i tried playing war rock a while ago, and in my humble opinion it STINKS. the problem is that the game doesn't use a regular server/client model with server side hit detection, but something else with client side hit detection. this means that players with high ping actually have the advantage, and not a slight one at that

after a few times of getting killed by someone who only came in view (round a corner) a second after i had hit the curb, i had enough.
