This game looks amazing, and from early reviews it is. Anyone picking this up today? Looks to me like gears of war on steroids
-
-
I'm interested but I haven't seen any reviews yet
-
I was thinking about picking it up, but does anyone know what type of activation it uses? My personnel computers don't have internet access, which is why I'm curious.
For anyone interested here's the link to totalbiscuits preview:

it uses steam i believe, so im not sure if all steam games have the same activation process. Anyways im picking this up for sure today
-
That's unfortunate...looks like I probably won't be buying this one.
-
Released in EU on friday, can't install it before that
This is something I've been wanting to try out since the late 80's when we played WH40k with schoolmates.

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
There was a demo of it, I've played it a bit but I didn't like it.
It's a gears of war clone, same gameplay mechanic, similar cover system.
Even the third person cam is the same and rushing/running is a carbon copy of GOW.
The design of the levels, at least in the demo, isn't amazing, it's well detailed world but also it feels bland and seen.
I think it's an average game, nothing great, at least the demo.
Controls are responsive and precise, the graphic is not that demanding (I can max out the game with my laptop while staying around 55-65 fps) but I don't feel the whole warhammer atmosphere around it except for the armors.
The story/acting/scenario seems ok thought. -
so im assuming my laptop will then max it out at 1920x1080 and keep it at 60fps for sure?
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
@ HaloGod lol I think you will be fine for a few years no need to ask.
-
What's the cover system in Space Marine? Is it the one where you hide behind every big box while health regenerates?
-
This game is a lot like gears of war.
Don't know if it's worth the asking price.
My 460m did kill it though. 40+FPS @ 1080p and everything on max. -
There's not really a cover system. Health doesn't regenerate unless you do finish moves. According to TB it doesn't play anything like gears of war, and honestly it doesn't look like it does to me. People who do clearly haven't played much GOW because that game is much slower paced.
-
was just paying with the demo a bit, I assumed this was another RTS... was very pleasantly surprised... seems fun, look forward to trying it some more. Definitely a sale purchase, and possibly a full price purchase. Runs great performance wise as well.
From the very little I played, it does seem to be very similar to Gears of War, which I loved. -
HA, that might explain why I couldn't figure out how to jump from cover to cover as in Gears.
-
Lawl Space Marines dont need cover, they charge with their chainsaw swords. :3
Got it with my purchase of the Warhammer 40k pack so im good.
But Dead Island unlocks at the same time so we will see what game i play soon, at least i got both preloaded. -
There is no snap cover system. Just because you're huge and bulky doesn't make it a GoW clone. This game is more similar to Devil May Cry(with less finesse and eye shadow) than GoW.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine review: The smarter side of slaughter | Joystiq
OMG hyped to BF3 levels with this.
Cant wait. -
I picked it up over Dead Island yesterday and I am pleased with my decision. The gun play is reminiscent of Gears at first but the game is more of a hack and slash hybrid type of game. You'll need to get in the middle of the chaos and execute Orks in order to survive.
-
I actually knew that, my sarcasm engine wasn't fully charged when I typed that
-
Will buy @ < $30.
-
the gameplay is very similar to darksiders.
-
I am almost done with the game.
It is FREAKING cool and fun. It is very short. if you like warhammer universe it is a must buy. -
I think it is a lot of fun, far better than I expected. Im also obsessed with w40k though so that probably slants my opinion. Hoping for a series of similar games to be released, we need more warhammer games!
-
played the game last night, loved it. im assuming this game uses a modified version of unreal engine 3?
-
im more a strategy and sim oriented gamer, although i love the warhammer 40k universe and thq.
i am wondering if this game would appeal to me. how difficult is it? -
Just picked up a copy on Amazon direct download for $39, instantly activated my key on Steam and downloading now on Steam.... look forward to playing, had fun with the demo.
-
the only thing 'negative' i see with this game (i dont own it yet) is that it seems it can be quite repetitive.
what say you guys whove played it? -
I played it until the (spoiler, so wont mention it) and im loving it.
Its so satisfying using the big hammer on orks. -
Played it for a while, feels too boring IMO. Just hack and slash through linear levels after levels. Get a new weapon/upgrade every now and then. All in all, feels bland and boring.
-
fun for like an hour. only bought it because my fat friend kept telling me to saying its sooo good.
i give it 5/10. you wont enjoy it alot unless you love warhammer 40k and mindlessly slashing at waves and waves of non challenging enemies. -
arent most hack n slash'es and fps'es like this?
-
hacknslash yeah but good fps arent this easy, repetitive, and have a more solid storyline.
-
played the demo and got the game.
from what i saw in the demo the game is quite good and i think it deserves at least an 8.
but i got it more so to help a great company (thq) as im more a strategy gamer.
downloading.... -
Just got this game, loving it so far. Contrary to popular opinion, It's nothing like Gears of War...
Does anyone know of a way i can increase the texture and shadow resolution(outside of ingame options)..?? It seems kinda low.. -
yeah its just so funny that people compare this to gears of war just because it has big dudes with big guns. and fyi of people who dont know this IS the source material/inspiration for all other copycats like starcraft and gow.
although i think the game looks great, i wouldnt mind bumping up my textures too since my laptop runs this easily. -
Completely agree.. AFAIK the warhammer universe is older than most other sci-fi series/games and it has "inspired" many of them
Anyway just finished the game, was totally amazing, they managed to very accurately capture the power and "weight"(for lack of a better word) of the space marines.. Even though gameplay did get a bit repetitive sometimes, it never felt like it..
I just hope they have some bonus missions incoming soon through DLCs or perhaps a quick sequel.. -
yup i just started playing it and it is very close to warhammer 40k canon.
although the ultramarines (to me) are the most generic, boring space marine faction and the orks are kinda lousy as enemies, i understand that they had to do it this way as a means of properly introducing the 40k universe to those unfamiliar with it.
hopefully the franchise does well, id love to see sequels with the grey knights, night lords or soul drinkers. the tyranids, necron and eldar would make good follow up enemies too- especially the necron. the source material is just so rich.
to me the fact that most of the story line is so clicheic is a testament to the awesomeness of the 40k universe. -
Well, not saying that warhammer 40k universe is bad, it's great, it's just the space marine game that is bad. Not all hack and slash are like that, some hack and slash games like diablo series or titan quest has a lot more depth to it with some RPG elements added. Or maybe it's just that I don't like pure hack and slash games, never liked god of war series as well which has quite similar gameplay to this.
-
Bought this morning and finished it already. Nice ending. For all the rest the game isn't a milestone for sure, it's easy and quite annoying in gameplay (except for the plot and setting). I probably died @ Normal difficulty no more than 20 times in the whole story...The weapons are nice, but proceeding will make you choose always the same due the firepower.
I hope to find some challenge online, but i don't know how long it will be played online
(due Battlefield and MW3 mainly)
The engine is very well optimized, i can max it from settings and with my GPU i never went below 30 fps (during the finishing moves in slow motion sometime happened to go on 25fps tbh but nothing less)
Globally i'd say.. 6.5/7.0 as score. -
im too early in the game to comment too much on gameplay but yes maybe the game wouldve had more depth if it had rpg elements which is also more of my style than an action game. in fact id love it more if it was in fact an rpg!
i do understand other peoples comments that there just isnt enough weapons, finishing moves, special abilities, etc in the game. i think this was intentionally done by thq, since adding too much would veer it away from warhammer canon and make it look 'over the top'.
but with that being said (and from the comments others have expressed), they should have made the game lengthier, made a tighter story, and added some more unique elements like fighting a dreadnaught.
with the richness of the source material, i kinda feel that thq was holding back a little and reserving some of their ideas for dlc's and sequels. -
I finished the game and it's a good game for me.
Unlike other game with very circumstantial story, this one is solid.
You die occasionally but not always (depends on you). Funny.
Game runs smooth even on max settings.
Looking forward for the second installment!
"A blood-fest game". -
yea game runs uber smooth on my sig laptop @ max settings. Fraps ticker is almost always on 60 fps.
-
since this game is clearly meant as an introduction to the warhammer 40k universe, i feel that thq should have really added an encyclopedia to explain concepts that are unique to space marines and the 40k universe like the augmentations of s.m.'s and how they extract and harvest geneseeds; the astronomican and navigators; the empyrean and the immaterium; demons and the warp. etc.
i think that would have been a great complement to the game, and a great marketing tool for games workshop ( the makers of warhammer). -
I am enjoying this game.
I don't use cover in Warhammer. I am an Ultra Marine! We don't cower from orcs! I blast them with an arsenal of projectiles and if they get too close, severed by my melee mayhem!
The graphics are fun and colorful. The gore is entertaining. It's just plain fun just like Darksiders was. -
yup im loving it too!
its exactly how i imagined warhammer 40k to be.
i actually like the pacing and story. i like the cut scenes and long transitions that shows the unique architecture and culture. i think its a good pace between story and action.
but i agree with others that there should have been more action with the jumpack and scenes involving more space marines/imperial guards in an all out war. oh yeah and its a bit short.
but all in all good fun!
