It looks like I'll probably be returning my copy of this expansion pack and wait for the problem to be resolved.
Long story short: Install O:SI, and it is very likely that your save game will have major problems within the next few days. Users report missing items, and corrupted game files that cannot be fixed.
All in all, I'm very disappointed that this bug was not fixed during the TESTING phase before public release.

Yikes... which reminds us all: backups, backups and backups of save files and data folders (i.e. PC games and main moddable files)
I have still to start playing Oblivion yet though... lets try and get to 3 months after buying it and we'll see

I believe there's already a patch in testing available for download at the elderscrolls.com site (as well as some user created patches).
It probably didn't crop up in testing because it does require so much gameplay time to occur before it starts popping up, and the people testing it probably never played that long with the test versions.
I don't see any reason to return your current copy, when patches are already available to correct it. -
OK, yes, the Shivering Isles Beta 1.2 patch, released on April 11th, includes this fix. You can download it at:

Patch notes here:

EDIT: This information is even linked in the original link you posted, so I'm not sure why you were saying the problem hadn't been resolved yet. As the article you posted says:
And that wiki has a page specifically about the beta patch:

Heheh sounds like night_2004 has been having a tough time with software lately.

The same things hapening on the xbox 360, i lost my horse and it's armour.
and a load of rare weapons.
I probally don't need to tell you how angry i was. -
I had the bug and the patch fixed it
causes items to lose their name -
Honestly losing stuff in oblivion isn't that bad.. there are no true "rare" weapons because once you become a certain level most enemies will start dropping "rare" items... which is very unlike games like WoW where you actually have to get lucky to get one

Just shut up!
-
Greg, I guess the patch has come out, as per Zadillo's posting.
-
It's actually still in beta, although it looks like they posted a newer beta patch yesterday (4/16).
