So I was playing some of the new Battlefield 3 Maps last night and I noticed that I was getting low frames on all the new maps compared to all the old games. I was getting between 50 and 60. I usually get between 70-80. Now I found the solution, it wasnt that the maps werent optimized, no. It was my gpu getting too hot. I'm running a vBios which overclocks the card to 915/2250. So the gpu is at 88° too hot apparently. So i put on max Fans and temps go down to 78ish. Et Voila my frames are back in the 70s, no drops.

Here is where it gets weird. I overclock the card to 980/2400. Frames are awesome around 90-100 but the temps are 85! Not that I've got a problem with either 88 or 85, but why is the card throttling at 3 degrees higher? Is this a common issue? I heard 680s throttle at 90°. I have never reached 90....

I dont like playing with max fans all the time, is there anything I can do to decrease temps apart from repasting?

Well, I suggest not running those cards al that overclocl all time(no1 knows how it affects yoru gpu long term), throtteling at 88 degrees coudl be normal, depending on vbios(not sure about this, but the throtteling from enginering bioses, differes from the released bios).

Plus, I suggest overclocking the card minimal, so you get 60fps stable, no need to have more fps(yuour screen is 60hz, so 60fps capped)

Don't run those clocks for gaming? You have a quite overclocked GPU and then complain of high temps. Aside from modding the heatsink, drilling holes or making sure airflow from the fan to the heatsinks is properly cooling everything, I doubt there is much else you can do with such high clocks.

It's also an accepted fact that a smaller laptop (if you have a 15") will be hotter or slightly hotter compared to a Bigger (17") same model laptop of the same GPU.

I know i shouldn't run those clocks for gaming I should edit my sig. But is it really the case that the cars runs fine at 85 and throttles at 88? doesn't seem right to me somehow...

My 680M since August still haven't reached 73*C..

With the 310.64 beta, my OC on stock Vbios increased to a stable 893-888 (+135 Mhz, + boost) core / 2407 (+607 Mhz) memory. It runs stable on BF3, Metro 2033, Diablo 3, The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Deux Ex....

Here's a sample of BF3 64-multiplayer monitoring in ultra 1080p for about an hr. No cooling stands / pads..

80*C+ reminds me of Fermi cards.. Even my 460M, when it reached 86*C last yr. playing Crysis 2 hrtp/dx11, I made sure that no more increase in OC and that's my limit for a Fermi card..

My GTX680M doesn't exceed 72C during my normal gaming mode too, but one day I tried the new feature that NVIDIA introduced, SGSSAA, and the temperature shoots up to 82C when playing BF3, frame rate was bad with it.

Here's the link how to enable SGSSAA if you want to test it out: Articles : GeForce 310.64 Beta Drivers: An Essential Upgrade For Gamers | GeForce

I noticed my 2 Dell 680ms on svl7 latest unlocked vbios like to cut back on GPU usage instead of actually "throttling" their core or mem clocks. every time when even one card reaches over 69c the gpu usage will drop anywhere from about 10%-45% on each card and thus fps goes down proportionally, eventually giving same performance as a single 680m if temps go high enough, and thats when my fans kick up to full throttle and knock the temp back down below 69c then fps is normal again. wonder if theres any way to prevent this auto throttle feature...would be a huge help in gulf of oman where every time i look at the big main construction zone i get about 60s-70s fps but when temps go above 69c i get like low 50s to high 40s and have to wait for fan to kick in.

Never heard of that, I fixed my issue with reverting back to stock voltage, I think the memory over clock was killing the card. I play with the same clocks as before exept memory but stock voltage now. Try repasting also
