Well the last time i played Rome Total War was when i had a P4 and a 9500 pro so i thought with a 720QM and GTX260m it would run nicely on epic battle settings....nope!
I was running at 5-10% gpu and 2-8 fps...granted there was 25000 units but come on!!! Still cpu or game engine can't handle it i guess...bah!
What do you think the CPU or game engine? My cpu runs at like 20% and multipliers go from 15-20x but if this is single thread why is it not using everything it can on a single thread? aka 23x Can even the fastest duel core even run the game? If Rome total war can't handle 25k units i assume a modern desktop wouldn't be able to handle shoguns2 with 25k units either. Assuming the cpu wont handle it...you'll just need 4 GPUs![]()
Though at the end of the battle I did win only lost 500 men and killed like 3500My longbowmen decimated the enemy. I thought i was going to die because i was planning on a siege so i got all longbowmen and some elephants and it was an open map lol. I somehow didn't die

Lastly, I remember years ago that hyperthreading was counter productive if you were not using multiply programs...since i have a quad core would it be useful to turn off multithreading?

the deal here is the low clock of the cpu. Since its a single threaded app, you are going to need the highest clocks possible. And yes, 25k battles are handled by the engine, m2tw should give you more performance regarding that as well
and there is no longbowmen, what mods are you running? -

...which i am glad lol just means 1-2 years from now i'll play empire and shoguns at great settings
EDIT: when you say 25k is handled by engine do you mean the engine wont handle that even with a good duel core cpu? Do you think a duel core IB desktop overclocked could handle a 25k battle?
EDIT: err i dont see an IB duel core so an IB quad core -

I said that the engine can handle the 25k battles, its going to be messy though, thats why I said m2tw will give better performance on that, those really large battles are easier after the upgrades the engine suffered.
shogun 2 is the easiest one to pull those large battles.
And as I said a high clocked dual core will fare much better than the low clocks of the 720qm, and no the 1st gen turbo boost cant maintain the turbo for long periods, thats when it will fluctuate the fps.
try to install Europa barbarorum, for me its the best mod out there, if you like to paly as rome, try SPQR, roma surrectum launched a new version last year, its quite good to play as the selucids on that one, try to survive... hehehehehe -

one thing that you should use is the recruitment list in case you play EB, sincerely its one great help.
The mechanics of those mods are quite different from the game, the recruitment rooster aint permanent in all settlements that you conquer, for example, you can recruit kleurochoi phalangitai (yes the names on EB are usually the ones that the civilizations used or some form of pure latim, and yes they do thrive for historical accuracy) usually in some parts of turkey and middle east, however even being phalangites you cant recruit them in greece at all, or like you can recruit the argyraspidai (silver shields if you ever played macedon on the imperial campaign) in some parts of greece, egypt and turkey, quite sure about greece, regarding the others...
And it will stop some of the nonsense, like the golden armies of the egypt, the phalangites from germany, the under arm way that the hoplites use the spear (yes only phalangites used the pike that way)
The diadochoi (alexander satraps that survived the empire fall) are for me the most fun, they run away from the eurocentric view of rtw to change for a much more extended map, I loved to conquer to the northwest of india. they have the deadliest archers in game btw.
