Meh, I played mods for a while, but honestly plain old CSS is all I really need.

Here's a list of some HL2 mods. Many of the single player ones I've already beat. If your looking for some time killers check em out.

    http://hl2mods.co.uk/find.php?genreString=&modeString=&downloadString=&Submit=Show

And here's my personal favorite single player mod just because of what you can do with it if you know the Cvars.
    http://www.smod-tactical.com/

And of course Gmod is still increadibly fun if you create your own server with a few people and just randomly make some kind of game up.

Most multiplayer mods won't have many or any players on them because people don't know they exist.

    Synergy

    What is it?
A mod for playing cooperative campaigns online, usually in small groups (2-6 players is the preferred range for most maps). It's very similar to sven coop. There are hundreds of user created maps, most are combat oriented, but there are also puzzle and story heavy maps, the map makers can really do whatever the hell they want. You can also play the half life 2 campaign all the way through to episode 2, including lost coast. It also supports cooperative versions of some popular single player mods like metastasis and riot act.

    How do I get it?
Open steam, go to the store tab, search for synergy or just browse mods, and there should be a link to install it (uses the orange box engine, otherwise it is free). It will auto-update and everything through steam just like a retail game.

    Some examples of fun maps:
-The build puzzle series, each map has over a dozen puzzle rooms with every kind of physics and platforming puzzle you can imagine, borrows elements from mods like kreedz climbing and source forts.

-Heat wave, a very beautiful map that really makes great use of HDR and setting up a pretty environment. A temple is set in the middle of a dense jungle, magma from an active volcano creates various hazards, steam vents threaten anyone who dares traverse the flooded sections, and antlion guards will start demolishing the temple and knocking down sections of it ontop of you. The gameplay is great too.

-Forgot the name, it's a map set on an otherwise deserted space station. Oh, and it's currently engaging an enemy capital ship. You and your meager little crew must work together to operate the ships weapon systems, salvage power supplies around the station and on a destroyed allied ship (that gets blasted in the intro sequence), and make repairs in a desperate attempt to keep your shields up and your weapons firing. This map was the funnest fight I have ever been in without even having a weapon or seeing an enemy soldier. If you win, you board the enemy ship and transition to the next map.

-Seven Hour War, it's a very cinematic map set during the seven hour war which is famous in the half life 2 backstory. You'll find it hard pressed to worry about the canonicity of the map while your marveling at the scenery, listening to the sounds of battle echo in the background, and dodging enemy shells while noticing the telltale call of a hunter group closing in on you.

-Also forgot the name, but it has a fully functional dropship that operates as a mobile spawn point, which you can use to attack an enemy fortress and even infiltrate it from different points such as an access hatch on the roof or fly over to the back door etc.... After clearing out the pretty elaborate enemy base, you open up a giant door in the center of it and actually fly the dropship underground, foehammer style, to infiltrate the enemies underground base. Through the rest of the map you'll find yourself using neat tools like a hoverboard that's controlled by other players grav guns, and a mobile cart with a teleporter/mancannon inside it.

-Harrier, words fail me here, just see for yourself.
