So I decided, hey, why not max out everything, including DX10 and AA in Gears and just see how it looks? Wanted to check it out with AA because i thought the shading on the characters looked a little strange normally. Was getting a surprising 15 FPS.... but after about 5 minutes *BAM* blue screen, and my computer shuts down! What happened?! Did I overheat or something? Or is DX10 just to demanding for my machine to even run?

Yeah it's working.... but what's got me worried is that I don't even have my card overclocked, so why would it be overheating? Possibly defective?

well if you crank it up to max then it's bound to tax ur vid card to its limit. the more demanding the game the more ur machines going to heat up.

I see. Thanks. So as long as it shuts itself off when overheating it won't be damaged, correct?

Dumb question maybe, but does the fan spin up to high before the shutdown?---might just need a couple blasts of air to clean some dust out that's preventing the fan from doing its job properly.

No modern GPU should overheat to the point of shutdown when running a game at factory clock speeds.....Something else (other than just the game) is causing this.

    Probably a driver issue.

The fans are always going nuts when I play games, so they are pretty much always full blast, so I can't tell. I don't see any dust blocking the vent at the hinge..... I also don't see any other vents, lol. As for driver. I'm using 169.04 off laptopvideo2go.

Here is a stoopid question...Do you have a cooler on the bottom of your notebook?

No. I figured the laptop is built to be able to use its own components with factory settings without the aid of 5 extra fans.

MBP doesn't have the most cooling efficient chasis and it's one of the trade-off of having such a thin frame.

Well, i sometimes get a bsod with ut3. But very rarely. Most of the time it's just crashing to desktop. But it doesn't happen in any other game including crysis, so it must be because of the game. Try another very demanding game and see how it performs. I doubt you have anything to worry about.

I tried maxing out CoD4 and I didn't get a BSOD. However I didn't play for very long either. 20fps in a FPS is unacceptable. Long enough for the GPU to heat up for the fans to max out however. Possibly a bug in Unreal Engine 3?
