Id prefer a higher resolution, but in this case they are so close whats going to matter is the quality more than anything.

1440x900, i have it on a 17inch screen and no complaints, its great

I`d go for the 1680x1050 for more desktop space. But I have both the 1440x900 and the 1920x1200 on 17inch screens and so I gues the 1680 would be the best compromise.

Either... it depends on what you mainly do... I would go for the higher one... but if you dont like small icons and text (not that you cant make those bigger)

leaning towards 1440x900 for a 15" screen as the optimal res. Its really personal preference, and won't make that much of a difference. its not that big a deal either way.

On a laptop consider your resolution more for desktop work than for gaming. Chances are unless you get something like an 8800m GTS which is in a 17" only anyways (yes, except Alienware M15x). With the 8600m GT I play virtually all newer titles at 1280x800 anyhow becuase of the 8600m GT's limitations. Best fps at 1280x800 and so far all look awesome.
