I own a Malibal P180HM
Spec:
17" P180 LED Glossy Screen
-i7 2860qm @2.50ghz
-8GB DDR3 RAM
-240GB 510 Intel SSD
-500gb Hybrid SSD
-ATI 6990M
It's native 1920x1080.
I'm wondering is 1920x1080 on a 17" overkill?
Is it noticeable?
+Some recommend 720p and I won't notice that much of a different.
+Some recommend I do 1920x1080 casual usage and 1680 x 1050 during gaming.
What I play:
-Shogun 2: Total War
-Left 4 Dead 2
-TF2
-Battlefield 3
-Skyrim
I can play all the game above @ max setting usually 60fps+
With battlefield 3 at high-setting @ 30+fps, Ultra Setting @ 20+fps
A cookie for your thought? =)
two cookies for those with similar setup. =)

Hnn, are you going to buy a new laptop? Or are you intending to lower your native screen resolution?
Anything lower than your native screen resolution will look blurried and ugly in gaming, watching movies and anything. -
No, I own this laptop for a few months now.
The AMD 6990M is a very powerful GPU.
I'm just wondering should I lower the resolution.
Before I had a 17" 9800gt @ 1680@1050 playing TF2 and it look fine. -
Your GPU is a beast. I would keep all games at whatever your screen's native resolution is.
And no, 1920x1080 is not overkill for a 17" screen. In fact, I think it's the best possible resolution for a screen of that size. -

Besides, if you turn down the resolution to non native 1080p, the screen will look slightly blurry. Not good in my books -
I'm guessing there's a reason you want to turn it down? (Like you think it may save you power when playing on battery to which I'd say, no not really.)
-
If you are getting the top-of-the-line GPU, it'd be a waste not to play the games at the highest possible resolution and settings
-
1080p is the good standard in a 17" imo. so your good given that your gpu is a beast
-
As others have said 1080p looks great on a 17" screen, turn the settings up and keep a native res. You got a powerful machine to game at full settings
-
I went from 5870M 900p to 6990M 1080p in screen terms the difference was very very noticable more than you would think by just comparing pixel difference. From 720p at you mention it would be vast.

What about 1920 x 1200.....sorry most 17" laptops today do not have that resolution. Too bad
-
Damn you 1920x1200 screen owners.
(Secretly want one of them screens) -
