Alright people, we all know what WoW is, now whether you've played it or not you still know what it is. Regardless, this is about problems with it and what can and can't play it.
A NOTE: I've never played this game.
As far as a graphics card for this game goes, good luck finding one that CAN'T. Even some intel extreme integrated piece of poop can play it. As far as settings, anything lower than that would probably have trouble.
I'm gonna be short and to the point. Here is Chaz's graphics post. I'm going to list the five groups and tell you the settings you should be playing at.
Intel Extreme: extremely low settings. lowest possible
Integrated: These cards can play at low with a teeny bit of medium. The more powerful cards can have some, very few actually, medium turned on.
Low End: They may seem wimpy, but with this game, they aren't. Mostly Medium, if not all medium, would be ideal. (The 6 series for Nvidia is equal to the 9 series for ATI)
Midrange: Mostly high, but not completely.
Performance: High and possibly max, as the list goes on, to about the 7600 area, you can completely max it out.
High End: Turn AA on and AF with some crazy resolution.
The Processor: With practically any laptop you purchase, the video card is what you need to worry about, not the processor, so don't worry about it.
If you're curious why I made this, the reason is simple: people make alot of WoW posts wondering how well it can play. Well, stop bothering us with new threads, here is your answer.
Here is a common question:
Why do I get good frames in one spot, then bad in another?
Simple, the amount of people in an area can strain the system because it has to do more tasks than running around whacking people with your bamboo sticks. Also, an upgrade in RAM would help as well.
Trust me, this needs help, so, if you can help me with it, please do.

Older cards have no problems playing WoW either, my 64mb Radeon 9600 runs WoW fine on medium settings.
One thing to add, if you are having massive frame rate issues in crowded areas such as AV or the major cities, try upgrading your RAM, it worked wonders for my framerate problems in AV -
It's funny... this is the only game that I have NEVER seen the framerate drop below 59FPS. (Not including raids, of course) All settings maxed, 1280x800.
-
My macbook's intergrated graphics ( 2 years old fyi) can play WoW max settings NO lag, and this macbook has the lowest spec's possible.
-
Screens please? No way the IGP is running it maxed at higher resolutions. Not to mention the fact that "no lag" is open for debate in WoW.
-
My friend plays it on his old 12" Hp laptop with a Pentium M 1.4 Ghz, 512 RAM, and some old (pre - 200m) radeon IGP. He manages about 20 fps outside and gets a little laggy in towns and prolly raids (but he isn't that high yet
). Just so people know 20 fps is completely acceptable in WoW because solo and pvp action isn't fast paced.
rep because people should see this topic. -
My 8600m GT maxes out that game no problem?
Played it for the first month of college.
Do not want to talk about it. -
it's ok mippoose, you'll get over it. time heals everything. lol.
-
I played WoW religiously over the summer, and am now trying to resist paying for it again. The game is like Crack, don't say I didn't warn you.

See, I also have a very short attention span, so... I can't sit there and play it. I tried guild wars and got bored after like 5 hours.
-
WOW is addictive I will give them that! But I know when to say no
-
wow is crack only for the weak lol. Ive tried playing the game 3 or 4 times and never made it past lvl40, I just see no point to the game.
-
well i should seriously be in rehab right now. and before i begin, i know this might seem like an e-peen booster, but honestly, just because i play MMO's doesn't mean i'm 300lb and have no life. I party atleast 3 times a week at my college and still maintain an active social life.
ANYWAYS, now that we have that outta the way *you'll see why in a minute* I started my first MMO at around 9ish..... i think. All i remember was i was grouping my lvl 15 wood elf druid in Crushbone doing the lego's and telling my group i turned 10 at 2:23am haha. Yes everquest. Then u fastforward to the dual release of EQ2 and WoW. played EQ up until that point, but my interest really dropped in EQ when GoD came out. Played EQ2 from release to this last summer, and picked up WoW in October to play w/ college friends.
Like Cabral, i really had a hard time keeping my interesting around the lvl 40's, cause the dungeons and everything at that point just sucks period, but it's better when u have RL friends ur playing with.
As with Smirnoff, take everything in moderation. It's a good game to play cause it gives u a sense of actually doing something, plus u get to basically talk on AIM or MSN, but w/ a virtual avatar. -

That seems pretty on the money, but I think the dedicated cards probably handle it better than you say. Even a low end dedicated card can max out WoW and get good fps, after that it's just AA and fps hikes. My mobility radeon 9700 could max it out easily. My Desktop X1650XT also, but with lots of AA, AF and fps so high that v-sync is a must.

The game is highly addictive in that the quests are very repetitive and you end up doing some things over 10x like certain instances. But the game kinda sucks when you think of it. No real strategy cuz u can use all ur skills u obtain, quests are boring. The whole purpose of the game is just to obtain more and more stuff. It sucks. I played it for like 8+ hours a day over the summer and after about 1.5 months of that I was like, wtf am i doing.
-
i played it for about a year and a half.....................such a waste.
but i waste my time now chasing ladiesand its more expensive as well
but seriously if you are still playing wow, stop, and you will actually achieve something in life. i stopped about 6 months before my final school exams, ended up doing well, and now have an awesome job.
and to ol mate above who played it 8 hours a day dring summer, i played it about 6 hours a day during school, and then for about 10 hours on weekends, then you can imaging what i did during the holidays
now i play games only a couple of nights a week, and then a couple of hours on weekends if i'm not going out. -
To me, seems like only the people who WANT to lose their life to WoW do. I have been playing for a year... still maintain a fluent musical career, home life, and keep active during the day. It's not hard... just get up from your desk!
-
do you raid or pvp?
-
Nah... raid occasionally, but mostly just play with a few good buddies on PVE.
-
well thats why..............your playing about 5% of the game.

The idea of controlling orcs, midgets, and elves was never appealing to me especially with the graphic to that of diablo 2 which btw is a much better game. It is (people say "might be me" but I already know it is me) definitely me that see the game as a cartoon-style, well cartoon, kind of like team fortress 2 except not put there on purpose by dev to fit the theme of the game. The only thing that WoW impresses me is it's community, hard to see that now days kind of reminds me of starcraft when the craze first started.

There are too many people who will never give WoW a chance.
Although it is extremely time consuming and ruins alot of peoples lives, it is undoubtedly the best game of our time.
I'm sorry if you don't agree.
And I'm sorry I have even typed this.
But there is no game that is bigger, better maintained, more populated, and downright replayable like World Of Warcraft.
I've never gotten past 40 as well.
Sometimes I regret not getting to the end before I quit.
I hear it's quite fun.
But if you don't try it.. Your gonna miss out on the biggest gaming sensation of all time. :|
Edit: I have only played 3 times.
A 1 month period, a 2 month period, and then a 1 month period. -
I disagree about the CPU not mattering. WoW, especially in raid situations where there are 25 people playing at the same time, is more CPU than GPU limited. A fast CPU makes a huge difference in how fluid everything moves when combat starts, because of all the number crunching that goes on in the background.
Most shooter games don't do very complicated computation beyond rendering the scene itself and maybe a wee bit of physics, but WoW does..
And to answer the previous question: yes I mainly PvE (raid). I have two different high level characters so I can play from different perspectives which makes it extra fun because I can bring what is needed or what I feel like playing that night.

Birog (Level 70 Night Elf Druid)

WoW has no "end". This is the fallacy that gets most people that become totally addicted. Since it's an infinite game there really is no way to "beat" it. Don't try.. it will always beat you.
If you got to 40 and stopped, you barely scratched the surface. Getting to the max level (currently 70) doesn't really require much skill. It's from this point onwards (the "end-game") that things get a lot more complex and you really need to learn about game mechanics to be useful in group play.
That said, even so, it's a lot more trivial to learn and master than, for example, EVE Online. xD By the standards of most other MMO type games, WoW is actually quite simplistic. -
Oh well it is my loss, but I guess I can just suck it up. -
-
It all lives of group play (raiding, instances) from that point. If you play mainly solo, it gets really dull from that point onward. You could grind months of reputation for a nether drake, or do arena skirmish matches until blood comes out of your ears.
However, if you are in some skilled guild, this is where all the raiding fun begins that makes most of the "veteran" players stay. Grab a headset and Ventrilo and join the fun. This also will get boring after a while after you farmed the same boss for the n-th time to get some item you want and it still doesn't drop, but it's still amazing how much staying power this game has.
I can't think of other game that has kept me interested for over a year, for the crazy amount of hours this game has. You gotta give it props for that. -
i was raiding as a priest for about 6 months
now tell me thats not going to get repetitive.
What WoW can play and stuff about it...
