I keep getting notifications that I have X amount of new items in my inventory. I never understood what these are so I just click on each on and hit convert to gems which I don't even know what it means or what can I do with the gems?
How to make use of these items in the inventory other than converting them and what are gems anyway?

They are a new feature (released yesterday) in which a steam user can turn their extra junk cards/backgrounds/emotes into " gems." These gems can be used to buy more cards; or, during the upcoming holiday event only, to bid on games
Update: It's been established that cards should not be turned into gems. The gem to dollar ratio is so bad, you're better off selling them one by one. Currently, the ONLY card set that gives a good gem to dollar ratio is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This Badge can't be leveled up.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Usually card, though emotes, gems, and occasionally coupons can find their way into there.

I just sell all my cards. Don't usually get much, few cents mostly, but hey, extra money is still extra money
