I have an HP laptop and need to turn down some of the settings to play FEAR without lag. What are the specs that I should turn down first that affect game play the least but give the best results?

I play fear using the 1280x800 resolution and textures on medium and it runs fine(at least the fear combat) on my go 7600

Soft shadows and volumetric lighting are the two killers, and if you have these on medium you should be mostly OK. I've found that playing without much AA if you have a decent resolution (i.e. 1280x1024 or higher) makes no discernible difference as well.

I always get rid of AA if I am having performance issues. I also dont notice lighting effects too much so I cut those too.

Shadows and AA are always big resource eaters. You can try reducing lighting effects, but by reducing it you will also reduce some of the game realism (while in comparison shadows can be said is a minor item when playing the game).
