So I plan on buying an external widescreen monitor JUST for the playstation 3. I won't have a desktop hooked up or anything.

What are my options in terms of audio?

    - I have the Altec Lansing 251 speakers, is it possible to hook it up to that, if so, how?

    - Or perhaps get the audio out of my Inspiron 1520? If so, how?

Trying to do this, preferably without a computer in between.

    Help appreciated, thanks.

Onkyo has some great deals on decent 5.1 channel receivers that have optical audio inputs. Work great with
    PS3.

There is a world of converters out there to help you hook up any audio solution you want, just a matter of what is most convenient or cheapest.

Like it would be a bad idea to convert the digital signal to analog, then amp it for speakers.

What does the antec lansing use for hookup? and what cords do you have for output on your playstation 3. After you answer that I can tell you the best way to go.

the ps3 has three ways to get audio out.

    hdmi
    seprate optical cable
r+l standard cables. (if you are using the standard/componet cables)
other wise you cant plug in that ghetto mini jack into the ps3 lol sorry. you can over buy the creative sound decoder.

Not too sure on it myself because I am not familiar with audio.

    Perhaps this review tells you?

As for cords and what not, I'm sure I can go out and pick up whatever I need since most connectors/cables are fairly cheap...so based on that, give me what you would think would be the ideal setup with minimum fuss.

Well your eather going to use the standard component cables and then get a RCA --> 1/8" adapter

    http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/adapters/rca-to-1-8-3-5mm-adapters/35-539/prod35539.html

Idealy you want one with female on both sides so you dont need an aditional adapter for the one above your going to need this in adition:

As for optical or hdmi you will need a device that accepts that kind of input, getting a converter would cost more than a device probably since it has to be decoded and not just have the interface changed like analog signals.

They have some cheap PC speakers that take optical, depends on how much quality/size you want. Or just get a cheap sterio receiver that takes optical or hdmi and use any speakers you want.
