Hey guys! I am a "fan" of the GTA series and i would like to purchase the 4th installement in the series.
The main components of my comp are as followed:
2.4 Ghz Centrino Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM DDR2
Windows Vista 32-bit
8400M GT OC'd (600/731), can push to (650/780) if necessary (fully stable)
1280x800 resolution.
When i say if i should buy it, i expect to get playable fps. (more or less 20-30)
Even if it means taking the res + gfx options way down..
Is it worth it?
Thanks![]()

Not really.
The 8400M GT will really struggle with GTA IV. Even at 800x600. The game is just that badly coded.
I play it on my 2.53 Macbook Pro with 1067FSB, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 9600m GT DDR3 512mb, and I can barely get 30FPS in daytime with 1024x768 res, medium textures, and draw distance and details at 20 of 100.
Sad really..

15 FPS at lowest resolution if you're lucky.

yep. GTA IV for PC is a great big bag of coding/optimisation fail. your notebook will very probably struggle to get decent framerates.
-
Even with those DOX 180.84 drivers? which are optimized for GTA 4?
-
I ran it on this laptop (see spec's in siggy) under Vista and it was not playable, under XP it runs decent. I doubt that video card you have can take it. The 180.84 drivers crashed my laptop and I had to remove them then and go with 180.60 set. I would not suggest you even waste the money to buy the game at this point. Maybe if they patch it but even then I doubt it would be enjoyable for ya. Sorry man.

Accually, im not all too disappointed due to your post.
The 8600M GS runs on the same core as the 8400M GT, thus the 8600M GS is simply an overclocked version of the 8400M GT.
Since you said it runs "decent" on XP, i might consider dual booting.
thanks

Yeah don't expect good results.

paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
my laptop below...
it can run GTA IV.... 10-30fps, but because of the low video memory(128MB), u can get missing textures/"wallhack" effect because the graphics isnt loaded...
overall, its still playable, but u wont get the beauty/eyecandy that you can get with a nVidia 8800.... -
Oh its fine i think...i have 256MB of Video memory.
mine is the 8400M GT not GS
-
I would say- just forget it, even with extremely overclocked card I barely see FPS above 28 with middle details and 1024x768...
What can i expect from GTA 4?
