I am building a new gaming laptop and I am somewhat new to it. I wanted help figuring out if the set-up I have in mind right now will be able to play most existing games on max settings.

    Sager NP9170

    Sager - 3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3610QM (2.3GHz - 3.3GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)

IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU

    AMD Radeon HD 7970M (2048MB) GDDR5 DX11

    8GB - DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)

120gb Intel 520 Series Solid State Drive (SSD2 Serial-ATA III) and
    500gb 7200rpm (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

    Windows 7 64-bit

The games I am most interested in, performance wise, would be Diablo 3, Crysis 2, Dishonored, and Skyrim. Can this system run all/any of those games on max settings well?

    In short: yes.
The ivy bridge CPU paired with that monster of hd 7970m eats those games for breakfast.
Even current high end CPUs such gtx485/580m and hd6990m can run those games maxed out with framerates well above the 40 at stock.
So don't worry at all there's no need. And since hd7970m has proved to be at least 50% better than current top end cards you don't really need to think about it.
The config looks fine so go for it :)

Is that pushing your budget? I'd suggest paying the extra $160 and getting the 3720qm. Or, if you can wait until September, get the 3760qm. They up the clocks by a further 200MHz on that. This config will get you into the next year but starting 2014, the games they release might or might not do well. However, you have stated that you only want to play the current big ones. If you are buying one now, you might a well get a rig that can play Episode 3 on max :D

Also, settings maxed out = 3D as well? Because the HD3D reviews have not been very good. The GTX680m should be out in June so if you want to do 3D, I'd suggest waiting for that.

However, if 3D is not really a necessity, the 7970 is A) available now and B) in many cases (rumored - the 680m is not out) better than the nVidia GPU.

There's no real reason to spend $160 on 300mhz. Processors from 3 years ago are still very viable options (P8600, Q9000, etc) and gaming is much more GPU dependent than CPU dependent.

my preference would be to get the stock 3610...and if you needed more, get an XM processor off ebay

The ivy 3610 + 7970m will eat all those games listed for breakfast. Crysis 2 will be played at 1080p DX11 ULTRA, Skyrim 1080p ULTRA 4xAA 16xAF @ 80+fps, Diablo 3 beta already runs maxxed on a 6990m...but a 7970m?

With the 7970, youre going to be fine for a while. Very similar to the setup I'm getting.

Hell, if the 7970M performance rumors are correct, it can run Metro 2033 smoothly and Anno 2070.
