I somehow feel that you are interested in the gaming aspect of the MBP and I advise you to think more about it as you will be spending a lot of cash on that machine. The newly released MBPs cost nearly double that of similarly configured HP Pavilion dv5t or dv7t. Also the brand new line of Dell XPS will be released very shortly which is expected to feature a much better card than their existing 8600m gt(ddr3).
It is upto you to make a decision but I think you can save a lot of money here.

I know I know... I just can't bring myself to use Window for anything but gaming.

256 vs 512MB makes no difference because the 128-bit can't really utilize more than 256MB of memory. The 9600M GT GDDR3 is a decent (10-20% faster) boost over the 8600M GT GDDR3. Architectural wise, you're right it's not much different but it is a little more optimized and faster clocked. The 9700M GT comes from the same chip as the 9600M GT, but it is even higher clocked.

dont count on the new xps, they arent even making that line anymore, they are leaving gaming to their alienware and integrating it into their studio and inspiron lines, but yea u can get better gaming machines for cheaper than a MBP
