I'm looking at getting the hp dv7 or hdx16 both with similar specs:

    9600gt 512mb
    2.4ghz core 2 duo
    4gb of ram

What games have people been able to play and on what settings. I looking at Empire Total War, GTA 4, Assassins creed, and a few more less demanding.

those ones are very demanding... GTAIV is just badly coded so count that out, Creed maybe at lower settings

I know GTA 4 is badly coded but i've seen videos of people running it. I would just have to download latest drives and patches and fiddle around with the settings. But assassins creed meets all the recommended requir. doesn't it?

Prepare to have your GPU get meltingly hot.

I have a DV7, temps of the GPU don't go over 70c for me (I do tend to prop up the back with a CD case when playing something really intensive).

    As for those games,
Assassins Creed will run at high,
GTA 4 will run at medium if you tweak some settings
Empire Total War will run at a blend of settings - will definitely run at an acceptable rate. Though large battles seem to be a problem for most at the moment.

Cool thanks. For a multimedia laptop it sure can run some good games. Also how reliable is the dv7 because I've heard some not so good things. But I assume thats the case with any laptop.

I propped mine with my wallet. It would run around 90C when I gamed.
