So, finally going to college with my Alienware, and the way my classes are scheduled from like 9 to 12 I have no classes, so it is time to sit on the laptop. When I'm not working, I'd love to have a couple games I can play without the need for a mouse (though I will have a mouse on me, some games that don't need it would be nice)
I'm asking for "nice graphics" not in the sense of "Crysis graphics" but rather in the sense of "I don't feel like playing command and conquer red alert for the thousandth time"...
So far I've found Smite (A game similar to LoL) and Torchlight work well - but Smite is multiplayer only.... I haven't tried yet but I'm sure that the wifi is firewalled to not have mulitplayer games enabled.
-
It's like trying to ride a bike without the chain. Get yourself a small wireless mouse and you will be set. Logitech V470 is very nice and since it uses bluetooth you won't need an extra wifi receiver (and it comes with a protective pouch).
-
I played World Of Tanks on a touchpad. Works out pretty nice, for me at least.
-
i'm sure there are other games that would work nicely, I just don't play a lot of games besides FPS and action-RPGs (Read : Mostly mainstream games like TF2, BF3, Skyrim)
I guess I could reinstall Super Meat Boy as though it is a lot easier w/ a controller, keyboard only is do-able.. -
if your using an armchair, get a decent cloth mouse pad and you will be set.
-
Most racing games can be played with just the keyboard

Get one of these: Amazon.com: Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315: Electronics

You're getting some answers that aren't really answers to the question you are asking, so forgive me ahead of time for adding another one. How about a controller?
Newegg.com - Microsoft JR9-00011 Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows
I just got one of these and don't know how I ever lived without it. Zero configuration, too. If a game supports controllers, it must support this to get the Microsoft "Games for Windows" blessing. -
Out of 6 replies, 2 have been answers to my question. (Thanks for the input on a controller Antipathy, though).
It's like when people get on an Alienware forum where someone is trying to pick which Alienware to buy, and some one comes in saying "NO WAIT! DONT! YOU CAN GET AN ASUS WITH BETTER SPECS, CHEAPER!" - he's not really going to sway the purchaser to get an Asus, he's still going to get an Alienware.
Likewise, you're not going to convince me to not play games with only keyboard.
Really, a lapdesk? What, am I going to stick it in my backpack?
Please, can't I just get a few more answers to my question? -
Minecraft. If you don't already play it or hate it. A great community and an awesome dev team. Plus you can get texture packs and shaders that make the game look beautiful. Combat might be difficult though but other than that your fine. It's like $30 with no DRM or necessary internet connection.
-
"From Dust" is also a game you can play with the trackpad.
-
You said: " I have a mouse that will probably be with me at all times, a Logitech wireless mouse w/ a nano unifying reciever... But say the only chair I can find is an armchair... No table to put/use the mouse on.. "
Yes, put it in your backpack. Did you even look at it?
That lapdesk is no larger than the base of a 15" laptop and about 1/2" thick, it works with a 17" laptop fine too. You can pull out the mouse tray for your mouse. I use one all the time with my 15" notebook and it works great. It fits in my bag under my laptop without an issue. Only 1/2" thick and weighs less than a pound. Unless that's too much extra to carry. It sounded like your concern was no place to put your mouse moreso than games that played well without one.

Well, i think we are all glad you have your priorities straight while in class
Like Minecraft or the such that would not create wild contortions and spook the stone fox next to you. Card games or even Mahjong should be quite finger stressing free but allow quick take down if the Prof get suspicious? -
No problem, just trying to help. I've looked for touchpad games in the past and there are few unless you're really adept at using the touchpad which I am not.

Wow, been almost two years since I posed the question, lol. -
You can play Diablo 3 without a mouse. I use the Touchpad sometimes for this game and it works just fine...
-
-
I only mentioned the "during break at school" example because I thought if I just said "What games can I use without a mouse" everyone would be saying "NOTHING! YOU GOTTA HAVE A MOUSE NO MATTER WHAT!" lol...
Thanks for input all, still taking answers if you got any... -
Plants vs Zombies and Peggle.
Works great with a touchpad and its low requirements will make it playable while on battery power.
Had no problems playing BF3 on singleplayer, even with the horrid touchpad Clevo ships on their P170HM line.

How can you play Plants vs Zombies with a touchpad? I can't at all. You need lightning fast reflexes on the later levels, although the earlier ones its doable I suppose. The only games that I've successfully played with touchpad/keyboard are Trackmania and card games.

(And a bunch of luck)
Another good game for touchpads is World of Goo.

+1 for trackmania. I also like need for speed shift.
Any turn-based game should be easy with the trackpad, too. E.g. kings bounty games, civilization series, etc.
I also like some Gog.com games like ultimate 7.
Point and click games like monkey island series.
Even dragon age origins is playable with the trackpad.

Up to now getting a desk and setup I use to game everything on my laptop touchpad, it really does come down to getting use to it and making sure if you are playing a shooter that you change the fire button to the space bar to allow you complete control. It is nowhere near as good as a mouse however and probably did not help my RSI in the long run especially World of Warcraft healing for 3 years which I believe was the cause

Since a touchpad lacks almost any precision, you can mostly play games that don't require any, such as Turn Based strategy and tactics games, for example:
Civ, Warlock: Master of the Arcane, Endless Space, Galactic Civilizations 2, Total War games, Heroes of Might and Magic series, etc.
RTS might work if they require low clicks-per-second ratio or ones that have a pause function, such as Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander 1+2 and the like, but you'll be missing on those later two with your lack of zooming feature in a trackpad, unless you can configure a zooming feature via your trackpad software.
Actually, any game which can be paused might work nicely, too, such as RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2, Might and Magic, even Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas might work, as the combat can be handled via the V.A.T.S system which stops the action and doesn't require you to pinpoint an enemy to get a kill.
Even Skyrim might work not half bad - out of the box vanilla I would suggest only playing as a pure a melee fighter as this character only requires clicking a button to drop enemies, but a mage or an archer character requires accuracy, so unless you're willing to sacrifice a bit by installing this mod:
AutoAim at Skyrim Nexus - Skyrim mods and community
which prevents the need for accuracy in Skyrim's ranged combat, I would suggest either keeping with melee (or a stealthy-assassin) or skip the game. Some people consider that mod cheating, but it improved the amount of fun I could get from that game by ten folds when playing my with my Breton warrior/mage with a XBOX 360 controller attached.
So to sum it all up, most Turn Based games or low-intensity RPGs will work great, others - not so much. Hope that helps. -
You probably aren't looking for a MMORP but I play FFXI without a mouse, as do most people who play the game on a computer.
-
I am currently playing Syberia and Machinarium with my touchpad, and I imagine that any point and click adventure game would be a good choice: The Longest Journey, the Sam & Max series, Monkey Island, and so on. -
Oddword Abe's Oddysee & Abe's Exoddus
-
try fifa or pes games. F1 series also nice
-
I played through Crysis, COD4 (multiplayer as well), F.E.A.R, and Half-Life 2 using a touchpad.
It wasn't too bad when I got used to it. -
I played WoW for almost 5 years using a touchpad and was very successful at it. Top raiding guild, top pvp teams (arena glad/rated BG's) and no one knew
I eventually told a few people I played with but they didn't believe me.
What lead me to play WoW with a touchpad was during military training I forgot my gaming mouse - this was around the time that WoW came out, so I was stuck playing on my touchpad for quite a while. I eventually got incredibly good on it and dominated in WoW in all three roles (tank, dps and heals). I don't game on desks, so comfort wasn't a problem (couch/bed is my preferred gaming area even though I have a useless desk).
Other than that, turn based strategies are played with touchpads most of the time such as Civilization V and Heroes of Might & Magic ... 3 or 6 being the best (5 worst).
You will not be able to successfully play an RTS or FPS game on a touchpad, so keep that in mind, unless you play on easier settings, but what's the fun in that? No challenge.
Turn-based RTS and MMO are your best bet. -
My friend also raided in WoW with his touchpad.. he said before he knew it the touchpad was natural to him. I heard there are some Touchpad mods/progs that can change the way they operate.
I think RPGs like witcher2, Deus Ex, MMOs like WoW, SWTOR, EQ2, Rift, LOTRO are playable.. especially when you dont have to be so twitchy like in a FPS game.
What good (and nice-graphics) games do you play with the touchpad?
