For playing games such as football manager, fifa, other sports games, some strategy games like my old age of empires and war and peace, and maybe my old call of duty as well, and maybe some games in the future:

    8400M G,GS,GT?
    8600M GS,GT?
    7600M?
    7400M?
    7300M?

is it worth getting the dx10 8 series and if so, will the 8400 be ok?

as a general rule for notebook gaming: Always get the best option possible.
since you can't upgrade your card later, might as well just get the best for future proof.

8400 will be the weakest card for dx10. I think you should try to look into laptops with 8600gt. I think they are good for what they worth.

It's only worth it if you get at least an 8600M GS. The 8400M GS or GT even are very weak cards compared to what the DX10 cards can do. The 8400 is barely better than the 7400, which isn't a horrible card, but will not perform well for a long time.

this comment in itself means that you want the best you can get. if you find a game that you want to play in 6 months and you can't run it, you are really going to be kicking yourself hard.

Sinec you said about future gaming, get the 8600m GT or a 8700m GT (from a Toshiba laptop)

So far though it kind of seems like 8700GT is currently worth the increase in price, if you can wait or are willing to wait, you might wait a bit to see what else comes out, or just go with a cheaper 8600GT.

8700GT is good though if you are willing to spend the money, and it is still quality card when it comes to power/heat(well theoretically anyways) for it's power.

also, is it only FPS games that need high end cards to run properly, and games like fifa, football manager, age of empires (first one) really dont need an amazing dedicated graphics card to work?
because im not likely to be playing any of those games, even in the future

I have been hearing that the 8700 is more or less just a oc'ed 8600, is this right?
