I'm looking to get a new laptop to replace my Zepto. I'm mainly looking for one that has more RAM, HD space, better sound, but I don't want to get a Laptop that plays games the same as this one, I want a little more performance.

Is the GeForce 8600M GS much better than the Geforce Go 7600?

    I'm confused by the benchmark.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

It scores lower than the 7600 in the 2001 3Dmark, but significantly higher in the '06.

Is there a newer better benchmark maybe?

8800 GTS on the Gateway 17" (forget the model number, look it up on the gateway forum) for US residents is by far the best combination of graphical power and value for money available.

I'm looking for a 15.4" and preferably under 1000. The Go 7600 wasn't exactly top of the line when I got this laptop, so I'm thinking I should be able to get a slightly better one for less than I got this laptop less year...

I found an Asus for under 800 but it was on a german website and it had a german keyboard, they seem to be fairly expensive to replace.

Also, I'm Ireland, and I've having trouble finding gateways online here :(

I wish I could find a place with older laptops that have been reduced actually.

for under 1000 the 7600 is a good GPU, but if you could squeeze 200$ from your wallet, you can get a base config Gateway with 8800GTS

I think you can get a Vostro 1500 or 1700 with a 8600M GT, and that`s about twice as good as the 7600,for under 1000$.
Check the Notebook and tech bargain thread for dell coupons.

A lot of NBR forum goers are US residents, so many of them don't read or don't notice the disclaimer on this website that the coupons are exclusive to US residents only.

Guys I'm looking at a Gemstone Blue for $880 with a GeForce 9500M GS and an Acer Aspire 5920G for $690 with an 8400MGS.

The Aspire is lighter and a little smaller, but I'm unsure how much the 8400 would be better than the Go 7600. I'm mainly looking to play C&C Red Alert 3 and Starcraft 2, as well as GTAIV and the new Hulk game if they come out on PC.

3.5kg may be a bit too heavy for me - I'm used to carting around 6615WD, any idea how much that weighs?

I don't know which would have the best sound quality, I make music so that would help. I guess most gamers would know more about sound quality too. The Gemstome Blue comes with a Subwoofer which is very impressive! With any kind of subwoofer, really, I wouldn't have that much need for external speakers, I'm not that much of a Bass junkie.

Asus and Acer are the two most appealing brands for me at the moment.

Although the 8400gs comes within striking distance of the slow clocked 7600 in my Sony (in 3dmark 06 at least) I don't think it will outperform it in any game above 800x600 because of the 64-bit bus so I would stay away unless you want to downgrade. 9500gs would be an upgrade since its basically the 8600gt just not sure how much of an upgrade in actual games (def not enough of an improvement worth buying a new laptop for IMHO).

The 9500m gs\8600m gt will show a large improvement in newer more shader intensive games ie. going from low settings to medium. What kind of processor does your old comp have?

Core2Duo 1.83 ghz. So not a big difference but still at least it's a little more(2ghz). I find the raw processing power I have now is pretty much enough.

Do you think the Gemstone blue has good sound capabilities?

3.5 kg is pretty heavy for a laptop. I think anything over 3 kg and 15" is concidered too big and heavy to be carryed around.. But if your not going too far it's a *great* price ;)

I'm tempted to sell my vaio and get one..

I know but at the moment all the other forums seem to be unhelpful.

I guess the only thing is that I want it to be lighter(maybe 15.4" instead of 16) and have more battery(when I'm not using the GPU obviously). Everything else is perfect. How much does a second battery cost for the Acer?

Probably 50-100 euro. I'll search around a bit and if i find any more laptops that fit your reqs i'll post them in your new thread ;) Maybe a sony with hybrid graphics? The best of both worlds; integrated and dedicated!

Hmm maybe Sonys are surprisingly decent value given how overpriced most other Sony stuff tends to be.

The Gemstone Blue I found is much better, Elara are expensive.

I was just wondering if anyone had one, as the Acer forum is a bit crap.
