GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB ? I ask because maybe i am setting my sights too high on a graphics card vs price range for a laptop/notebook w/e.. My at home GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB still runs everything flawlessly on high settings for the most part. So what class would this card be in, for notebooks? i know notebookcheck lists them as classes...

I was under the impression that notebook gpus performed only slightly less than but similarly to desktop gpus so I'd guess it would be similar to an 8800MGTX or 9800MGS+ GPU.

the 8800mgtx is actually a little bit faster then a 8800gs desktop card. for the level of performance you want you have to go with either a gtx 285m or ati mobility radeon 5870.

unfortunately desktop cards are way ahead of laptop cards. if you get a laptop that doesnt have a super high resolution you can game fairly well at say 720p-ish res rather well (at native res). my 9800m gts can still keep up with lots of the newer games out at native res with everything maxed out or close to maxed (AA is not even a choice here though)

thanks, if that's indeed true. I very well may be setting my sights too high for the amount i want to spend. I can't believe 2 years later my desktop graphics card plays so well, are things not changing as fast as they used to be? It used to be 6-9-12 months something you paid $150 for was $50...

I'm more confused than ever when it comes to gaming laptops. Maybe i'll just take a break researching. I thought for sure i knew what i wanted, but it turns out.I don't think everything i want, i can get at the price i am willing to spend. Ever since i saw i3/i5/i7's every time i see a notebook with dual core. i just ignore it. /sigh i do kinda wish i had picked up the http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung...ategoryId=pcmcat196200050015&id=1218161511080 the price was insane at the time, imo

    Well, what's your price range?

You might not be able to get maximum settings in all the latest games, but for $800 you can get a laptop that'll play most DX10 games on high settings and DX9 games on max.

Seconding ryokowashu, AA is something you sometimes just have to live without ;).

i can still play all my games maxed out at my native res(1440x900) with some AA. only exceptions would be GTA IV and Crysis.

Only the Mobility Radeon 5870 would satisfy you then, I'm afraid. The 8800GTS 512MB versions were quite a bit faster than the 320MB and 640MB versions (G92 vs G80). In comparison, nVidia's best mobile GPU, the GTX 280m/285m has the same number of shaders (128) and a much lower core clock. You could of course get a laptop with two of the GTXs in SLI.

Mobile HD5870 has 800 shader cores and computational power of over 1.1 teraflops. There isn't game I can't play with high settings at 1080p yet.

My G73 has a vantage score of 8,900, highest I've seen was over 9,000.

Get Asus G73... you won't go worng and it runs cool... unlike other ASUS G series laptops... also uses less power than any other NVDIA card laptops which easily use 25W++ more... almost 2hours+ on Battery too...

If I'm not mistaken, the high-end mobile NVIDIA cards use close 60 watts or more when gaming. The HD4650 uses 25 watts.

The High-end NVDIA mobile cards use 75W... while the 5870 uses 50W only... 25W difference... I wasn't very clear on what cards i was refering too.. Sorry.
