The new Lenovo Y480's just released...
At CES lenovo showed the y480 with a GT 650m!! The only card you can get is a GT 640m??
Now i dont really care about the y480 so much because im going for a y580. But what scares me is that the Lenovo y580 isnt going to have a GTX 660m like promised.
Any word about that?
Thanks.

Y480's or out now on lenovo site. 4 configurations all 640. No options.

Damn....I that sucks....was looking to get a 14"

They promised? Or they stated? Those are 2 different things.

I was also keeping an eye for this one, bummer
-
-
I talked to them, they spent 15 minutes trying to explain why the 640M was just as good.
They said the 650M might come around sometime but they have no idea when if ever. So stupid - lost a customer big time. -
-
I'm in the same boat, I talked to a Lenovo sales rep and they said the Y480 was only available with a GT 640M because it was just released. They said a GT 650M version would be available in about 2 weeks.

What an absolute ridiculous company. They have 4 models and 3 of them cost over $1,300 for almost the identical crap.
-
Not to threadcrap, but shouldn't this be in the Lenovo section of the forum?

see that he mentioned the lenovo section of THIS forum.
not that the section that you should put it is active at all.
people at that section are mostly elitist who only think that the real pcs are thinkpads, its annoying really, but this is annoying as well -
LOL @ Lenovo gaming
EDIT: Before anyone freaks out, I'm just poking fun -
, granted with an external 560ti card hooked to it
I see no reason to freak out, besides with the massive mess of nvidia GPU's and rebadges and part numbers with up to THREE variants on desktops we have no idea whats going on.

dont get excited over link being for desktops, same crap for mobile GPU's -
Just as an update, the rep I talked to today said they aren't sure but expect the 650M would come around June based on past release schedules. No promises on that being true nor word on pricing, so take it for what its worth (not much).
Sad to see them blow the release of such a potentially awesome machine. Guess Ill be waiting for Monday to see what the competitors have to offer. Too bad, I was really looking forward to the Y480. -
Still says 650m here with 660m as option.

It's relevant in gaming in my mind as a lot of us are looking for a mobile mid range gaming solution. NBR is being kind of short sighted by making you hunt around for relevant information by going through each manufacturers forum looking for a certain class of laptop.
If they simply made forums for upcoming laptops based on class it wouldn't be so annoying. /rant over -

Two years ago, I got a 15" i7 quad with 8gb DDR3 and ATI 5730 for $650.
So yes, (cheap) Lenovo gaming -

The OP just doesn't understand. -
And what companys? -
Highly believe 650m GDDR3 will be revised in future for Y480. 650m GDDR5 standard or as optional as GTX 660m in Y580.
And what's with the whining, you aint going to change what they want to do lol. -
-
-
My best bet is they will revise the Y480 by September

640m and 650m ddr3 are close, you can likely close the gap with ocing.

You should be able to get better answer if this will be transferred to this section:

I used to love Think Pads (for work) until they launched these cheap plastic outsourced Lenovos. They are garbage compared to the build quality of the old T4x line...
-
IBM sold their PC business to Lenovo. That's what I remember. -
You remember correctly it seems. Made in China. Walmart sells them now!

---g - budget
-thinkpad - enterprise class, divided in

---X - mobility
---w - workstation
---t - general workhorse
---L - budget line
--thinkpad edge - budget enterprise and design centered line
---s - design

---b - ultra budget
there are some lines that I might be forgetting, but the same guys that designed the thinkpads are the same guys designing it now.
if you are comparing a consumer line to a enterprise line, you are doing it wrong, if you want go compare the lattitude with the inspiron, I think you will find yourself in the same awkward opinion. -
At one point I had a T61 Lenovo replacing my T42. The difference in quality was shocking. Not in a good way. The plastic near the hinges started cracking in about a week and you could flex the case near the mouse pad a few millimeters just by pressing down. Keyboard developed a problem with 2 keys after a few months use. I switched to using remote desktop on an untrusted personal laptop and turned in the T61.
The thing reeked of "made in China". -

Yeah whatever, just I advise you to buy them whatever company produces in your country, I find it hard for you to find any OEM that produces outside of china or east asia. Actually there is none
-
The manufacture is unavoidable. The design spec and standards are set by the company.

You have. I haven't said anything about the design though, I'm talking about the manufacturing quality and materials - the standards. Lenovo clearly wanted to leverage the bullet proof reputation of the ThinkPad brand while reducing costs to cash in on the margin before anyone noticed the quality drop. The quality is no better than any other lesser brand now.
China can produce any quality standard, that is clear. The companies spend or cut to whatever their target is. To your point, Alienware manufactures in China as well. Great quality products. -

You also have to be aware that all enterprise class manufacturers are moving towards basically the same trend, chiclet keyboards, and some other minor changes
and seriously I cant stand another chiclet vs traditional keyboard discussion, so dont do it please
and to do add that if you arent pleased there a few other OEMs that will produce a notebook for you, show them what you want with your wallet.
What happened Lenovo???
