I plan on selling my laptop my father sometime this Christmas assuming I can get laptop equal to or more powerful then my current E1705. I recently fried my 7900GS after foolishly keeping it slightly overclocked for over a year. I am probably going to replace it with a X1400 which will be sufficient for my father.

    I have to main questions:

First, what kind of mobile GPUs are around the the corner and will be readily available during the holiday season? Im well aware of the 8600/8700 and ATIs solutions, but Id prefer the next gen if they will be out soon.

Secondly, will I be able to get a decent 15.4 inch laptop with a midrange GPU for $800 and down? Im hoping I can configure a powerful Dell or something else with a decent GPU for gaming.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks,
    Justin

EDIT: Correct me if Im wrong, but arent some notebooks coming with HDMI outputs?

    As nunka said...

Otherwise in upcomming 17+" laptops not expect under 2000$ though

    2700HD(posibly better than 8700gt)
8800GTX(king which is meant to replace 7950gtx)

Actually I think you can accomplish that with a Dell vostro as long as you configure it with the lowest CPU, RAM, HD, etc.

He wants a system as good as, or better than, his current one. The Vostro systems can hardly even touch his current system in any aspect other than processor speed, and that's for $1300+.

Im sure this holiday season I will be able to build an Inspiron or Vostro to beat my current specs. Im talking about a decent CPU(1.8ghz+), mem doesnt matter because Ill be transferring my 2 gigs, HD space doesnt matter, and hopefully a SXGA or XGA+.

Are there any midrange GPUs coming out in the near future or will I likely get a 8600GT?

For your price range, the Vostro is your best bet... it has the DDR 8600 GT... Also the Asus F3 series is a consideration since they are barely above $1000 US

I will have to look into Asus, I have always wanted one. Ive been doing my research and it looks like I will have to shell out a little of my own money, but Im sure it will be worth it.

After looking around for a little bit I stumbled onto the nVidia G98, the successor to the 8600 series. Apparently nVidia is releasing the series the 12th of Nov. How long do you think before these cards get out into notebooks and are readily available? Anyone think Dell will have these for the holiday season?

    Looks tasty to me :)

    Thoughts?

With your budget, you definitely shouldn't expect to nab one of those.
