Ok I don't know if this is a driver problem or a temperature problem. I'm using core temp to see my cpu temps and i'm using Nvidia monitor to see my gpu temp. My specs are in my sig. Could my temperature programs be wrong about the temps cause when I play COd4 or even gears of war they will work just fine for about 30min then the frame rate just drops! from 45 to 15 and sometimes my screen will flicker and the game will freeze for a few second then it will go back to the game. When I checked my temps when this problem came up it said my cpu core 1 was 32 and core 2 was 35 and my gpu was 54. So either my temp programs are wrong or is this a driver issue? I tried my stock drivers did not have this problem but gears of war did not work with my stock drivers I tried 177.92 but then halo 2 ran like crap then switched to 174.74 now I have this problem. What other drivers can I use? I have a 9500MGS. This is getting frustrating and any help is appreciated. Please help! Thanks!

Your GPU is probably downclocking (I used RivaTuner to check). I have this issue as well and haven't yet found a driver that prevents this. This link may help.
The games I've had this issue with are:
Vegas 2 (frequent)
Dead Space (occasional)
Mass Effect (rare)
Left 4 Dead (occasional)
World in Conflict
Some games not affected are:
Bioshock
Assassin's Creed
Orange Box
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War
I've tried changing drivers, downclocking, overclocking, etc
I'm installing XP to see if there's any change sometime this week.
It seems this is a common problem in the 9500m GS cards -
Your graphics card is downclocking. This is a know issue with the G84 chips such as the Geforce 8600M and 9500M series. While there isn't really a fix for it that I know of, some have managed to decrease its chances with driver changes. Try the 180.44 driver from laptopvideo2go.com and see if it fixes this issue.
-
what other drivers could I try? or what ones will work best with the 9500mGS? Remember I tried 177.92 and 174.74.
-
178.24 and 188.48 seemed to lessen the frequency of downclocking
-
Seem to be driver problem only, and you can try HWmonitor software to monitor temp, else update your Drivers, you can download drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

Driver Page
180.48 <-- I meant this and not 180.44
178.24
After Cheeseman said it was a G84 error I googled '8600m GT downclocking' and got this website
^They give 2 suggestions
-Driver Change to 179.13
-Force constant performance under RivaTuner
I can't change drivers atm, but the second solution seems to be best as you can use the best performing driver as long as you watch your temperatures.
Does anyone know if forcing constant performance in RivaTuner is dangerous if you keep your temps under control (less than 80C)?
I will probably test the second method after finishing up some work
edit: found another possible solution link
-this suggests running games in windowed mode
Thanks to Cheeseman for mentioning that this problem is a G84 issue, as the 9500m GS is much more rare and thus less cases to search for. -
wow 180.48 killed my FPS halo 2 went from 45 FPS to 25 and cod 4 went down from 50 to 26 wow bad driver. I'm thinking of going back to my stock drivers ause I cant find a driver that worked better than those. Any other drivers I should try?
-
have you tried 179.14? thats what im using. it works better for me than the 180's.
-
I havent tried 179.14 but the only issues now is with RE4 which keeps crashing I did not play it that much any way but everything runs fine with no down clocking so its all good for now with stock drivers.
-
i would give them a shot since they are asus drivers for notebooks.
-
-
i would think the drivers for desktops would run hotter.
What is causeing this?
