Talking about Dell's current video cards in their Inspiron 1520s. There's the NVIDIA 128mb 8400M GS and 256mb 8600M GT.

I used to have the ATI Radeon X1400 in my old E1505...

Long story short - Dell lost my notebook when it was sent for repair, so they sent me a 1520 with the NVIDIA 8400.

I called Dell and they told me that the NVIDIA 8400 and ATI X1400 are similar, so I can't swap it for the 8600.

    Please help me out. Thanks.

Edit - I have a $100 coupon from Dell, so I was wondering... Can I get any of these graphic cards? http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=dhs&c=us&l=en&cs=19&k=nvidia+8600&cat=all

Well what you got was another notebook with equivalent specs. The 8400 is a little bit more powerful than your old 7400. So that's what you got.

They didn't give you the 8600 because that would be a much more expensive upgrade, which you were not entitled to.

^ Oh, OK... I was a bit confused because the ATI said 256mb and the NVIDIA said 128mb... but it all has to do with shared memory and whatnot, I think... (ATI said Hypershare.) Thanks

You were lucky that you got the 8400m GS. It's a better GPU that supports Direct X 10 and Shader 4.0. Also it seems to have better benchmarks in 3D Mark 06.

I think you can pay to upgrade the replacement system (I THINK). Just check into it. But you are getting a better GPU.

Oh, cool. :) I'm fine with the graphic card then... I'm not a big gamer, and the ATI has been good for me. I'm sure the NVIDIA won't disappoint since it's even better.

    Thanks for the replies!

the 8600gt search on the dell site is for DESKTOP gpu

will not work with your laptop

try to see if you can pay them + your 100 coupon to get the 8600gt

then you got yourself a great deal, akin to EVGA's step up program :)

    ^ Thanks. :)

Since I'm fine with the graphic card, I might use the coupon for something else though.
