What is the GMA X3100 equivalent to in better known cards?
-
and can the x3100 handle 1080p mkv x.264 and wmv-hd.
-
The Intel GMA X3100 is closely equivalent to the nVidia Geforce Go 7300 or ATI Radeon X1300.
Pretty darn good performance for an integrated graphics card.
I was surprised at its performance increase from the GMA 950.
Also the drivers are still only in beta stage and are not the final drivers.
Once the final drivers come out, we'll see some improved performance. -

it can play modern game like Company of Heroes or Call of Duty 2 fine at low settings. performance is definitely a surprise.

But, with a fast enough dual core processor, it should be okay. You'll just be using a lot of CPU and killing battery.
Correct me if i'm wrong though. -
I can play HD on my 1150 so I don't think any problems. 3D hard the rest no problem!
-
in wiki it says it can support directx 10,mpeg-2 and vc-1.i think vc-1 has something to do with hdness lol.i did read somewhere on one of these laptop sites that it can,and you can hook up external monitor or lcd.i mean if alienware has this in one of they laptops id get it.i just like the look of those shells lol.

My 3 year old HP can play the 720p trailers. But it is extremely taxing on my CPU. So much so that I can't view the 1080p trailers (sucks too, because I have a WUXGA screen).
It's better to have a dedicated graphics chip that can decode HD, rather than have all the work done by the CPU.
Are you getting a laptop with an insanely high resolution screen to view HD? If so, in most cases you'll find they have serious graphics...no GMA 3100 nonsense. -
well i thought if the x3100 could do 1080p then i would be okay, cause i dont need to really play games.i have seen a small list of games that the x3100 can play on the intel site.

What laptop are you getting with a 1920X1200 resolution screen that comes with an Intel 3100?
Unless you have a high res screen, or are outputting to a 1080p monitor, you probably won't notice the difference between the two.
My point was, a dual core intel processor should be able to handle all the HD decoding you could want. It's just that newer, dedicated, graphic chips can take the burden off of the CPU, and decode HD themself (Nvidia's PureVideo HD for example).

oh no the laptop isnt gonna have 1920x1200 res,its just id like to use an external monitor or lcd tv for the 1080p stuff.but ur right bout the purevideo,i was reading up on that the other nite.

No GPU decodes x264-mkv files. That's all in the CPU. Purevideo HD and Avivo HD can only help decode a limited amount of codecs in a limited amount of formats.
