    I thought the 6990 was only like 5%-10% behind in terms of performance, but for like $300-$400 less.

    well if you want to get the fastest, it would be the gtx 675m, which is just a rebadged 580m, but its a lot cheaper, around $450 for just the card. well at least thats how much it costs to upgrade from 1 to 2 in a p270wm on malibals website. and thats with the additional power convertor box thing, which costs around 150, so who knows maybe its just a $300 dollar card.

    Alienware offers it in a single card configuration (M17X-R3) and an SLI configuration (M18X). I am actually selling my R3 with a 580M, check the NBR Buy/Sell/Trade forum for the thread.

    If you get the right cooling on it and overclock it properly then it is really, but then it kind of enters its own power class.

    confusing topic.

    Fact: some games run faster on 6990m
    Fact: some games run faster on 580m
    Fact: 580m scores higher in synthetics when overclocked

    result: 580m if you care about synthetics, pick the card based on the games you prefer and their performance. I prefer crysis and the 6990m is faster so I bought a 6990m.

    6990M does have switchable graphics. You switch manually from integrated Intel HD 3000 to dedicated 6990M. Sometimes it is better that automatic Optimus. I have to manually disable the integrated GPU in the bios so I can use ENBseries mods on my 580M.

    Also when both are at stock voltages, the 6990M is better in some games, like Alan Wake, Deus Ex, Metro 2033, etc
