I'm not talking about graphics, I'm talking about general lifespan.

Gaming laptops are subjected to extremely high heat (compared to normal ones), and their fans are on a lot of the time. Laptop fans are mechanical parts and thus will break eventually.

I bought my current laptop around a year ago, and I hope that it will last for at least two more years (i.e. until I graduate University).

My previous notebook however only survived for 2 years, at which point the hard drive and fans both failed. The fans are a big concern for me, since fans seem to die more easily than other components. From that point onward, I always made sure to get a 3+ year warranty and always use notebook coolers.

So what would the average life expectancy of a gaming laptop be?

Its fine as long as it stays cool. But I mean, stuff gets old, so it breaks, just like any other computer, so you have to replace it

I'd say as many years as you want, you just have to replace stuff. For being able to play actual games... 3 years

No worries. If it runs in normal operating temperature range no difference.

if your main worries are just a failing fan, well don't worry, at the first sign of a failed fan, your notebook should get so hot you'll either turn it off yourself, or it'll turn off automatically, then you can send it in to be fixed, which should be free, or cheap just for a fan.

Lifespan is mainly the time period for which the laptop can perform effeciently...when it starts giving problems like: slow speed, frequent crashes, outdated graphic card..

Either u live with these problems or u declare your laptop worthless.

I sold my previous laptop after 4 yrs of using it.. (specs: compaq presario x1000 ...intel centrino @ 1.4 GHz ....ATI mobility radeon 9200)

Cooling has generally improved over the years and it's not as much of an issue today as it was in the past.
I have a Sager NP5320 gaming notebook that is now over two years old; I've been using it pretty much 24/7 for the last two years and it is still running strong. If you take care of the notebook it can last you a very long time.

Yup, cooling is the key. For instance, my packard bell doesn't get too hot, so i think it won't be any problems

Pro users, both people who game as a profession, and people who always want to be the fastest, will insist on nothing less than an upgrade less than every year. In general, it takes 3 months before your brand new top of the line notebook isn't the best anymore. But this year was slow, and I blame that the ATI/AMD buyout. Which allowed Nvidia to sit on thier profits and just wait.

say if things begin to fail, would you be able to replace the fans, and other components in the laptop to save it?

look ...laptops arent so upgradable with exceptions ... Graphic card of a laptop can't be changed so if u have Geforce 5 series then obviously its no use having it.

Its like having an old vintage car....which runs but not like Porsche.

Answering your question crazychu: U can replace certain components and fans can be replaced. Screen also can be replaced by third party if damaged(very long process but).

Conclusion: Lifespan of a gaming laptop depends upon Graphics as graphic cards cannot be replaced, upgraded or changed for 99% laptops

I don't know how tech savvy you are as in if you are one of those people will buy a laptop in 10 years after this one but in general by the time the parts degrade of their own accord it will be time to upgrade for sure.
