    Hello all. my laptop is hp pavillion dv9500t with the config :

    HP Pavilion dv9500t CTO NB
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    - 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
    - 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 511MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
    - Webcam + Microphone
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
    - 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW
    - High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    it came with vista, but i slipstreamed the sata drivers on xp setup and installed xp on it. hp doesnt give drivers for this model with xp. i have installed 169.04 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

    the current clock speeds which i have set are :
    Core 592 mhz
    memory 456 mhz
    shader 1254 mhz

    my 3d mark 06 score is 3157
    and i get above 30 fps in unreal tournament 3 at 1024 X 768 resolution with max settings.

    so, firstly , is the performance of my card low than it should be ?

    secondly, the temperature which i saw using atitool is above 95 degrees while playing. is this too high ? should i lower the clock rates ? should i put some other drivers ? what should be the maximum temperature ??

    third, i usually keep my laptop on a table and use it, but recently ive started to sit on my bed with laptop in my lap and a pillow under it to pad myself from the heat. does this cause additional heating ??? should i play games only on the table, or should i operate my laptop only on the table ???

    please help. thank you in advance

    Keeping it over a pillow or something like that blocks the vents, and results in reduced airflow.. Consider getting a lapstand... As for the card, I have no idea about the dv9500.. You could check out the Asus F3Sv overclocking thread, since it uses the same card..

    Judging by the 3dmark points, Yes.

    Yes it is a little high. The temps should be 90c and below at the very least.

    Aslong as you dont block the intake/outtake vents. You wanna give the intake vents at least 5cm of air space

    Hello,

    I am not getting above 30 FPS with native solution 1280*800 My current setting is everything at medium, 2X Antialising, Lighting on, Shadows off.

    My average FPS is 25-30 in SP.

    I am producing 480/400/950 with 8600gt

    If I OC, would I get better FPS?

    PS. I heard that there is advanced config, where I can improve my FPS?

    Yes you should go to a Pro Gaming website such as http://www.team-dignitas.org/ You can then download the top players' configs which will increase FPS dramatically, but 2X Antialiasing is too much for starters.... My 8800gts (desktop) couldnt run 2X Antialiasing comfortably, comfortably being 80fps+ consistent

    You really don't need antialiasing for multiplayer games, If you have time to look for jaggies, you are doing something wrong ;)

    The stock clocks for the 8600m gs(GDDR3) are:

    Core Clock (MHz) 600
    Shader Clock (MHz) 1200
    Memory Clock (MHz) 700

    So that's not much of an oc there:\

    Leave your laptop on a hard flat surface for extended gaming(half an hour+), and maybe elevate the back off the table if the base get's particularly hot.

    Using the 174.74 driver i oc'd my 8400m gt to 600\1200\800 and got 3582 3Dmark's in 3Dmark06 so you should be getting something similar.

    Is this possible? I have an HP Pavilion dv9700t with 512MB nVidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition. Sadly, HP underclocks the 8600M GS 100MHz under nVidia's recommended stock settings. The PC does fairly well in gaming, but it could do better with an overclock, and I should at least be able to run stock settings on it. I have a Rosewill laptop cooling pad for it. The only thing I can't figure out how to do is actually overclock it. RivaTuner and ATi Tool both crash because Vista 64 won't use their unsigned drivers. I found a signed driver for RivaTuner but it doesn't work correctly. nVidia's own nTune thing gives me the blue screen of death every time I try to select it in the nVidia control panel.

    Follow this:
    - Disable (and keep disabled) UAC
    - Download Atsiv here.
    - Place this file in the RivaTuner folder and rename it to atsiv.exe (from ats1v.exe)
    - Open Notepad and place these contents in the document:

    Code:
    'Initialise vars
    FstCmd = """C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner v2.08\Atsiv.exe"" -u ""C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner v2.08\RivaTuner64.sys"""
    ScndCMD = """C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner v2.08\Atsiv.exe"" -f ""C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner v2.08\RivaTuner64.sys"""
    Program = """C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner v2.08\RivaTuner.exe"""

    'Initialise objects
    Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

    Return = WshShell.Run(FstCmd, 1, true)
    Return = WshShell.Run(ScndCMD, 1, true)
    Return = WshShell.Run(Program, 1, true)
    -Save as RivaTuner64.vbs and run it. (this will replace rivatuner.exe)

    EDIT: If you have rivatuner 2.09 youll have to change it to that in the code above.

    I thought they didnt make a GS with gddr3? i guess i was wrong.

    yeah. hp likes to do stuff like that. their only downfall... they limit the drivers and thry dont allow fan control either.

    Hello,

    I wanted to know what the recommended overclocking speed for 8600GT. I don't want to over kill with OC. I just want to little more power out of the graphics card. I think I am currently running default (480/400/950)

    it's 475 mhz for default clock. the recommended oc for the 8600 is what your card can handle after testing and gaming. every card is not the same. some are better than others @ oc'ing.

    The default is 475/400 for your card. Shader is 2x the GPU clock (950).
    I've gotten mine up to as high a 625/500 without any noticeable problems. I did not try any higher, and I'm not keeping it at that speed. I'm running it at 550/450 for now. Remember, every card is different.

    According to notebookcheck there are GDDR3 versions and since nvidia quotes 700MHz memory and op has 456, presumably 400 stock, there would have to be ddr2 and GDDR3.

    660/530 is the highest Ive gotten. I personally find OCing a waste for 1 fps more

    you can usually safely oc your core speed +25% above stock clock speeds. but on my ddr3 8600gt i OCed from 475 core stock to 640 (+34%) and is running smoothly.

    Also try different drivers and see how they work with Overclocking. For me, with the 169.09 driver and 174.94 I Oced to 550 and with 175.75 I can OC up to 640. So you can really get a range of stable Oc speeds, you just have to tap into the right forceware build.

    Yeh if you OC you should around an 5 fps increase under your current settings if you OC right.

    But you should just take conzy's advice and go for the obvious approach.
    Also try turning off specular map, it helps.

    The two FPS killers are shadows and soften smoke edges. Disable those two, and max out everything else. I'm pretty certain disabling specular maps will not dramatically decrease the framerate, if at all. If you are still not satisfied with the framerate, disable AA.

    the 8600m GT is not a beast of a card.. Awesome for a notebook, but COD4 will crush it with high settings...

    Doesn't work. I did exactly what you said, the atsiv.exe opens a console window for a split second, RivaTuner comes up and says it can't load the unsigned driver. Is there anyway else to get around the (really incredibly stupid) driver signing nonsense that Microsoft is trying to pull?

    Those dumb idiots at Microsoft need to realize that unsigned drivers aren't just used by malware, that they have tons of good uses and not everyone can afford to hand over money just so their program can run...would it be possible to overclock the GPU in Linux and then somehow save it when you go back to Windows?

    I typed the commands in by hand in a console and made sure that it loaded RivaTuner64.sys. It did, so I started RivaTuner. This time it warns about incompatibility with a driver, and comes up working. I clicked on the "System Tweaks" screen where you can overclock and it detects my core/shader/memory clocks (500/1000/400) correctly. However, adjusting them won't apply, if I click Apply, OK, and then come back to the page, the changes haven't applied.

    Hey, Ive been doing some extensive Ocing tests and today I summed up to courage to take OCing all the way up to 715/900. I monitored it of course while running 3dmark 06. It was running great for a while and then i noticed an dramatic downshift in performance. Memory clock went down to 500, core went down to 200. The temperature at the time however was only 76?!!

    I was using Rivatuner monitor and running 175.75

    Has this happened to anyone else? Any recommended forcewares for higher OC clocks?

    I think I may have found the source of my problems. nTune won't overclock either (nVidia's own utility). It lets me change the slider but won't apply the changes. I think this may be because it's an HP driver. The driver version is 167.43. I've read that the 169.04 driver will support 8600M GS overclocking on dv9000 laptops. Where can I get said driver that has Vista x64 support?

    In response to "way too many threads on the 8600M graphics card and overclocking", not all of them pertain to the same thing. One talked about GPU temperature, one was the 8600M GT, I'm talking about Vista 64's driver incompatibilities, etc.

    So...working OC drivers for the 8600M GS in Vista 64...where can I get them?

    EDIT:

    Ok, so I updated to the 169.12 LaptopVideo2Go Vista x64 modded INF drivers...but it does EXACTLY THE SAME THING! It still won't apply any settings!
