hey guys, first post here. i was wondering what kinda game i'd be able to play with my Acer 5112WLMi. it has an AMD Turion 64x2 TL50, 2gb of ram, and an ATI mobility Radeon X1600 (on the sticker it says up to 512 HyperMemory, what does this mean)? thnx for the replies.

You should be able to play just about anything you want, mostly at maximum graphics details. The x1600 isn't the fastest GPU on the market, but it's a beast nonetheless. Most things short of FEAR and Oblivion should be able to achieve near-full settings at your native resolution.

The "512MB Hypermemory" is ATi's deceptive marketing scheme - you only have 256MB of VRAM onboard, and the other 256MB is borrowed dynamically from system RAM, which contrary to the name is actually about as "Hyper" as a 90-year-old lady on Ritalin.

so i'd pretty much be able to play anything with high graphics like FEAR at decent setting? and i just ran the DirectX Diagnosic Tool and it said my approx. video memory was 512.0 MB is this including the memory from the RAM? thanks a lot, i've never played games on a laptop and wanted to make sure my laptop could play all the games or i'd bring it back.

Yes, the 512MB reported by dxdiag includes the HyperMemory from system RAM. And yes, you should be able to play anything with decent settings.

Actually your x1600 is vastly underclocked and isn't running close to what a normal x1600 does. So no you won't be able to play fear and oblivion at full settings at native resolution. its just what they did in the acer 5112.

    3dmark05 score (your laptop): 2500
    3dmark05 score (normal x1600): 4000

Do you think you could run 3DMark 05, and tell us what score you got to see if your GPU is underclocked or not?

Even if your GPU is underclocked, a quick download of ATITool would fix that to some extent. Just keep an eye on heat.

david07, READ MY THREADs about Acer Aspire 5112.
and if you have more questions for me, feel free to ask me there.

    lowlymarine,
Can you explain me how to push my laptop to it's max safe performance (safe overclock)??
    Can it hit 3000 3D05marks??

Because as far as i know, we can't extend the GPU memory bandwith, can we? In this case, 5112's x1600 operates on 64bit (which common x1600 operates on 128bit).

Core Clock in MHz 473 MHz
Memory Clock in MHz 369 MHz

When gaming, the temp could be 65 C max

(Can you tell me how to push my laptop to it's max safe performance (SAFE overclock) please??)

One more thing, 5112's x1600, it only has 128mb onboard memory, 394mb is (sometimes) taken from computer's memory.
