    Ok,

    so I : (right click) personailze-display settings-monitors

Here I am offered two different screen types .....

My laptop is a dell xps m1530

    The screens offered are

    1) 'Generic PnP Monitor on Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT'

    2) '(Default Monitor) on Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT'

    Which should I be using?

The generic PnP monitor offers me around 5-6 screen reolutions, whereas the dafault monitor only offers me 1 screen resolution (800x600)

Its also weird that 800x600 doesnt really appear correctly, everything seems really big ....

any help would be great !

You should always be on the PnP monitor.
