I'm getting a new laptop soon (probably a lenovo) for school and it would be nice to be able to play some current games on it when I'm bored
I was wondering what games can be played with the basic GPU that comes with the new IVY bridge processor (Intel 4000)

I won't be playing graphic intense games like Batman: Arkham CIty, probably something like World of Warcraft and down

Note: I'm typing this on a 5+ years old laptop and I feel fine with most of the games I can find on it, its getting a little harder to now though

Thanks in advance from your help

HD 4000 should manage pretty much most games at 720p and low detail if not some medium detail. Just some of the real graphics intense games like BF3 or Far Cry 3 or Crysis 2 will not run really well at all. But most other games will do fine. Most if not all MMO's will run fine with it, and pretty much all games from 2010 and earlier should do fine.

    Wow, most MMOs huh
    Sounds good!
It's amazing how laptops have evolved over such a short time
Thanks a lot for your speedy reply!

Don't expect blazing fast FPS, maybe 20-30 in most cases, although some games run remarkably well.

You can see a handful of benchmarks I ran on my Clevo W110ER with the HD 4000 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...10-clevo-w110er-first-look-review.html#hd4000

Just make sure you have TWO RAM sticks because it is sensitive to dual channel, a single RAM chip will gimp performance by as much as 40%. So 2x2GB or 2x4GB RAM is highly recommended. Also, make sure your computer is set to high performance mode as well (in Windows Power Options) otherwise it can lose performance as well.

I'm not aware of the specific differences between the HD4000 in mobile CPUs vs. the HD4000 in desktop CPUs; however it seems at least the desktop version can run most games at 1366x768 and even a few at 1680x1050.

Here are some benchmarks from Anandtech:

    Crysis Warhead

    Metro2033

    Skyrim

    Battlefield 3

    Dirt 3

With Battlefield 3, note that that is single player and not multiplayer. I can hardly manage 25fps in multiplayer at 1280x720.

2 RAM sticks is better then 1? I actually did not know that, thank you!
I'm not sure that the computers I'm looking to buy have that option to split RAM, I'll have to see

As for the high performance mode, I always run stuff with high performance, battery doesn't matter to me much because I'm not going to be that mobile with it

Once again, thanks for the tips

Most laptops come with 2 RAM slots. Only some of the really cheap laptops only come with one or some of the ultra thin and light come with it soldered on the motherboard, but those are both more the exception than the normal. If the system comes with only a single stick of RAM it's really easy and cheap to upgrade to two sticks these days. Just make sure it doesn't void the warranty to upgrade RAM. Again, 95% of laptops you can, the rest you can't without breaking a "warranty void" sticker.

You can get 2x4GB RAM for ~ $35. If your machine already comes with a 2GB or 4GB stick you can just buy a single 2GB or 4GB stick, but I think it's just better to buy two of the same, and remove the original for best compatibility.

Source based games will run well. I have HD3000 and run TF2, Garry's mod on 720p at high settings.
