What temp. range should a GPU be running at?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with an 8600M GT, and after intense gaming the temperature will register about 66-68 C. Idling it will default to lower clockspeed and reach 53-55 C.

I have heard of ASUS G1's idling 70 and peaking at 90 C, but my desktop's GPU idles at 37 C, so these temperatures seem quite high to me. Converting to Fahrenheit, that's about 130-150 on my laptop. I always remembered the rule that electronics shouldn't be exposed to >120 F.

Do these temperatures hurt the hardware? Or are they made to withstand such high temperatures? What's a common range?

Those are actually decent temperatures really for a mobile gpu. My Go7400 often hits 75-80, which while hot is still perfectly safe. The GPU won't shut down until it reaches about 110 or so degrees to avoid damage.

Temps are never measured in Fahrenheit either, so your idle temps are actually extremely good, let alone anyway wrong as you seem to think! Mine idles at about 55-65.

 

mine idles at 60C and probably goes as high as 90 under load

 

My G1s goes from 74 at idle to 85 under load with a zalman cooler. Without a cooler, it can go to 101C

 

Oh well my 7800GTX goes up to 105 sometimes usually at the very stressing resolution of 1920x1200. Don´t worry about those temps. These are mobile cards that are designed for extreme heat. Now I don´t run with a laptop cooler, not always it goes up that high, usually around 93 degrees celsius. I have though overclocked it of course and put Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU and CPU.

Do like this, undervolt your CPU and by that lower the chassi heat and thereby lowering the GPU heat. It will help a little at least. Also remember to clean out your fans, that is open up the laptop completely and clean out the fins on the fans.

 

Mine hits 92-93 Celsius at max stress.

At native resolution with eye-candy enabled, games will generally hover around the 80 degree Celsius mark.

Computer components are rated for FAR above 120 degrees F. You might have read it wrong, it should have been 120 degrees Celsius.

They don't always survive the trip above 100 Celsius, but they are generally rated for 110-120 Celsius max temps.

 

Anything over 50C is worrying for me :/

 

8700M GT here. Idles at 53c. Maxed at 69c during heavy gaming.

 

Your temps are fine. It's when I start hitting 100 C that I would double check the manufacture's specs.

I thought my 8700M GT is going to get even hotter than the 8600M GT during heavy gaming....... I guess not maxed at 69c its just amazing during heavy gaming..... (no cooling pads btw)

 

My go7700 idles at about 53-ish and heavy load goes to 75-ish.

 

hmmm why such high temperatures?? Is my rivatuner displaying wrong temps? Mine idles at 30-35 and reaches around 60 max for 6 hours of playing bf2!! How to reach 90?? My gpu is the famous for being hot 7950gtx

I read a "how to" thread on rivatuner around here somewhere. It said the program sometimes under-reports temps, and you have to enter in a correction factor to make it report proper data.

saddly NPC dosnt tell you the temperatures of your GPUs ... i need to find another software for that one

 

Just use nvidia monitor.

 

So 75 C is already safe? LOL. I already get worried because my GPU reaches 65-70 C while playing, and it's overclocked. Then again, my GPU is weaker so that might have been the case. My GPU is around 50-55 C while idle (surfing the web, typing, etc.)
