I have heard about a lot of people saying the expansions aren't worth it. Most people it would seem play strictly BF2.

Well, there is a more complex answer to your question.

Most of the online Battlefield 2 community plays on the originally released maps and scenarios. However, with the release of Special Forces, it added one additional unlocked weapon per kit. So really, most people play original BF2 but use the additional unlocked weapons from SF expansion.

However, there is a way to get the Special Forces unlock without owning the expansion. All you need is for someone who has the expansion installed on their PC (and also has the disc) to log in your account. This will give you the additional unlocks of the Special Forces expansion to use on all the normal BF2 maps without having to buy the expansion.

You don't need to pay for any expension packs, all you need is Project Reality:
    http://www.realitymod.com/

The most popular and only sucessful BF2 mod out there.

BF2 is fun with standard maps.

However, Special Forces is also quite a bit of fun, as well as Armored Fury. Either way, if you pick up BF2 pack now, it comes with everything for $20.

Yes, the expansions added new maps, and new vehicles, and the use of utilities like zip lines. However, I can easily say that 90%+ of the BF2 online games take place on the originally released maps.
