Up to 1071MB of shared memory or up to 358MB of dedicated memory?

Might help if you include the card.

Shared memory won't help you that much, no matter how much you have (practically).

I think perhaps a card comparison thread would work better for you here...

Oh, sorry as you can tell I'm completely computer illiterate. Shared 1071MB has NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (UMA) and dedicated 358MB has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Hm... that is a tough GPU comparison... if it were me though I would go with the 7150

Yeah, you are kind of asking which is better, a dead black rat or a dead grey rat. But I guess the 7150 is better.

It's the total amount of memory, dedicated+shared, that the system can allocate to the GPU. However, for those 2 GPUs, they can't make use of anywhere near as much RAM as they can be allocated.

Now that we know what cards they are, the next step to answering your question is what are your uses?

As most of the previous posts have mentioned, they're not very good for gaming, but may suffice for your needs.

Edit: Was looking at your other thread.

Neither of these cards are very adequate for WOW.

Just spend the little extra money and get a computer that has an ATI 3450 or an Nvidia 8400 in it. They will blow those integrated chips away. Or even the integrated ATI 3200 in the HP dv5z would be a lot better than those two graphics cards you mentioned.

Yeah I have a 7150m and it sucks. It will run wow at about 25-30 fps on med settings.

Ack. Stop saying they're "USELESS FOR GAMING". I hate it when people say this. While it is not designed to run the latest games with hard core graphics technology, it will manage lesser graphical and older games just fine.

Heck on my Eee PC with the much antiquated Intel GMA900 (not even GMA950) I can run lots of great games on it, including Half-Life 2, Age of Empires 2, Operation Flashpoint, Battlefield 1942 & Vietnam...

The X3100 and 7150 are not power houses by any means, but will manage games that fall within its requirements. Additionally, dedicated memory is typically the much better choice, as that RAM is usually faster and dedicted for GPU operations only. Shared just means it uses existing system memory.

Those cards are "almost" completely useless for gaming. But that depends on what/how you want your gaming experience to be.

The pre-built in your link costs $1,029.99 and includes the X3100 (a little pricey for what you get). The customized version starts at $749 and offers an $84 upgrade to the 8400M GS, which is much better than the X3100.

The dv5z with the HD3200 would still be cheaper though......
