    Hello everybody.

Just recently I started to look in here for something to replace my old DTR laptop. I know that the recommendation goes to ASUS G73. No questions, nice piece of engineering. But...

I am on budget and not after the very latest HW nor very latest games either.

Here comes my question: What was recommended a year ago as a 17-18" gaming laptop? How good it's value today? My idea is to look for that model in e-bay and see if it is a good option?

    Well, please refresh your memory.

    Thank you.

what sort of budget do you have to spend so people can give options.

Well, it helps if we could know your budget. The lower end G73 models start at an amazing price for such a notebook.

Cutting straight to the point, I believe the Clevo W870CU/Sager NP8760 was a popular model late last year (or it may have came out early this year, not sure). The Asus G71Gx and G72Gx were well performing notebooks for their price, but due to heat problems and various bugs, they were both shunned by quite a lot of the users on this forum. The Gateway P-7811 and P-7805 models were also highly popular as well.

The Alienware models have always been popular, but they come at a high price, so you may be getting less performance for your money than if you got an Asus or Clevo laptop.

There were also plenty of highly popular 15.6" laptops, but since you require a 17-18" gaming laptop, there is no point in listing them.

If you specify your budget, it will be much easier to help.

Thanks Shadow. Your answer is what I need. I will check these models and keep an eye on a second hand market.

I haven't thought about real money yet, I am slowly evaluating possible options now. That is why I didn't fill in a formal request.

Also lower end ASUS G73 models sound very sweet to me. Although there are mostly high end models are listed in Switzerland and they are way more expensive than in US. I'll check that anyway.

    Thanks again, knowledge is everything!

You can't get better bang for the buck than the G73 at the moment. If I didn't need more portability and battery life I would have opted for it.

Keep an eye on Newegg and Buy.com for refurbished G60s and G72s. Here are a few.

The MSI GT-725 was a good and powerful laptop (it still is). Also, look out for the Clevo M860TU/Sager 8662.

the users sounds like they live here in the US, so they are not going to be value-added-taxed. yet anyway....
