When you say gaming, do you mean Frame Rates?

XGA isn't so perfect on a 15.4" screen. WXGA, sure (that's 1280x800), I think that is pretty nice. I also like WXGA+ (1440x900) on 15.4", but that is my limit. Once you get into the 1680x1050 range (WSXGA+) you should jump up to a 17" unless you have better than decent eyesight.

In other words, you will get higher performance on your notebook (which has WXGA) while playing at native resolution than someone who has a 1440x900 notebook.

The lower resolution your screen, the higher Frame Rate you will get. This is because your graphics card only needs to paint a small picture compared to something huge.

Do they even MAKE non-widescreen notebooks anymore?

for just gaming purpose just get WXGA, 8600M GT is not exactly a powerhouse GPU, even with some of the newest games now are too demanding for a 8600M GT at high settings. So even if you get a higher resolution screen, you'll have to game at WXGA resolution on some current games and probably all future games.
