What would be your ideal game? How about a SIMULATED BATTLEFIELD?

Just thinking about all the games I've played over the years, and what game I would develop and what it would include if I had unlimited resources.

I have always been a combat flight sim fanatic, and even enjoy sub, tank, and other real world combat vehicle simulations. Granted that genre is all but dried up these day.

That being said I always thought it would be great to have a Battlefield 2 type game but as a simulation. A real world war including the simulation fidelity of Falcon 4 with each vehicle, and run in real time 24/7 battle. Imagine having a fleet of fighter aircraft, submarines, tanks, and soldier platoons advancing on a virtual battlefield against another team.

None of this die 100 times each map lasting an hour hooey. I'm sure there'd be lots of game mechanics to work out, but at least it would be challenging to learn each of the in-game vehicles since they'd be simulated to real world counterparts. And it would take some learning curve, but at least it would take a long time to master and probably be a long lived game.

MMORPG's like WoW is just too simple gameplay for me.

Just some thoughts. Maybe others have some kick ass ideas for new game concepts.

I loved Operation Flashpoint. Spent probably as many hours with that as with Battlefield 2 (well maybe not quite). There is a game called ArmA that was made by the same people that made Operation Flashpoint. But it is too buggy at the moment. Maybe the actual Operation Flashpoint 2 will be better?

I want a game that literally puts you into the star wars galaxy and you can be anything anything you want but to become things like Jedi you have to go through training that you might not pass. Also have the whole corscant mapped out. Go to any planet in the star wars galaxy have the whole planets surface mapped out.

Note Star Wars galaxy's was not like this.

I really miss Fighter's Anthology. Terrible graphics, but awesome game play, especially with the scenario editor you could create huge fleets of navy ships, tons of SAM sites, fighters, AAA, everything. Ahh the nostalgia.
If they created a Fighters Anthology 2 (which I know they wont), but with more emphasis on land units (tanks, more infantry, etc), and ability to play any vehicle, I would be sold. Literally BF meets FA.
I remember creating huge navy battles with that game, fleets and fleets of navy ships attacking each other, flying and bombing the crap out of them. Those were the days.

    Is this close?

If nothing else, the teaser is pretty awesome.

Edit: Whoops...I forgot about the part where you said 'simulation' :)

Nevermind the link. It was all an illusion!

I think it'd be alot of fun to play a simulation oblivion or dynasty warriors type game

But there is one problem I'd have with a simulation. People, thinking its a blast to run around and kill people, would literally start running around and then there'd be more violence, thats the one case I dislike

This is in progress... the DOD recently began advertising to startup their own games company simply to create a battle sim. They've tried in the past (america's army) and failed miserably...they've also tried using off the shelf games and that wasn't good enough.

I could never get used to the *BAM*, and the cries for a Medic to come and insta-patch them up from bleeding to death... a little silly.

There is aces high, you can use ships, planes, vehicles, and even be on foot with a small gun(game maps are hughe so it's not a good idea to be on foot plus the gun does little damage). Too bad their main focus is on WWII airplanes so ground combat is not very developed.

WWII Online was a great idea but poorly implemented. Is that still going running these days?

Aces high sounds alright, but I hate month to month pay to play sites.

I played the hell outta Battlefield 2 and it only cost me $80 with all the add-ons and have over 330 hours so far. Wow.

As far as Star Wars or Star Trek, I'm very surprised there itsn't a WoW type MMORPG based on those universes. They're already very well developed and have a huge fan base. I would love to jaunt through the Star Trek universe engaging Romulans and Borg and kindly handing them their ass.

Thanks for the link. My only concern is it is a console game as well, which may make a it a dumbed down RTS/action game that could be really cool.

Funny actually I have thought the same thing myself about an awesome, total war simulation. IMO the only thing that has come close was Joint Operations on an 150-player soldier on a 6-hour long battle.

Whats with all of these war game ideas  . Why not create a peace game. You and the enemy can meet in the battlefield, lay down the weapons, and plant flowers while holding hands and singing showtunes. The player could even "simulate" some of the flowers growing in REAL TIME.

Alright, I think we even have all of the components we need!

This game will be a mix of Call of Duty, Harvest Moon, DDR/Guitar Hero/Rock Band, and procedural flower generation done by Introversion software (the guys that did Darwinia).

We are definitely on to something my friend.

Joint Ops, yeah. I loved that game. Too bad it didn't get the following of BF2. It was great fun. Hopefully Battlefield 3 will have the same flavor.

Is anyone playing Joint Ops any more?

Aces high is free if you limit yourself to the 8 player maps, and pay only if you want to join the 100-500 player maps.

There was also a multiplayer 2D game called Stellar Frontier, basically the game consisted of four races trying to conquer different solar systems and eliminating one another. There were many mods for that game, including Star Trek ones. Many of the SF players wanted a 3D version, but there was never one. The game died in 2005-2006, some servers still run, but you are lucky if you find another human playing.

failed is very subjective... in terms of the DOD and americas army the failure was in the games ability to teach strategy NOT its retail success.

Ummmm, It wasn't the intention of the designers to try and teach strategy with the game. If I'm not mistaken the games main purpose was to boost defence recruiting?
