    What's better for gaming: i5-4200M + GT 720M or i5-4200U + GT 740M?

Both laptops cost about the same and will be used for gaming at their native resolution (1366X768). Which one do you think will be better and is the difference significant enough to replace the former (which I already purchased) with the latter?

    Thanks in advance! :)

It really depends on what games you're playing, and what kind of hassle there would be to get the 740m machine. The 740m will get you a decent boost in FPS on some games, but neither will do a very good job with the latest games if you want high settings. That being said the 740m will play more game titles fluently, while the 720m will struggle with more.

    Thanks for replying.

Will the downgrade from 4200U to 4200M offset some of the benefit from upgrading to a 740M (considering the the relatively low resolution of the laptop)? if so, is there any way to estimate by how much?

    4200u to 4200m is not a downgrade

I would not recommend replacing, however if i were to choose between the two i would definitely go with 740M, its much more powerful then 720M, in games you may see a performance increase of around 30%

Always go with stronger GPU, in this case 740m is quite more powerful than 720m.

sure it is - the 4200U has clocks ranging from 1,6 GHz (base clock) up to 2,3 GHz using two cores or 2,6 GHz using only one core.
the 4200m has clocks from 2,5 GHz (base) up to 3,0 GHz (two cores) or 3,1 GHz (one core). that are differences, which lead to notable lower frames in CPU-heavy games. just for an idea: on NBC there exist benches of the GT740M for BF4. with an i5-4200U, you get 19,5 FPS in high details. on same settings they got 23,7 FPS with the same GPU but a i5-4200M. nothing groundbreaking, but I hope you get the point.

but nevertheless: on the decision i5-4200M+GT720M or i5-4200U+GT740M, I would take the second option with the GT740 without any hesitating. because the 4200U may be a little bit weaker than the 4200m, but the GT740M just wipes the floor with the GT720M (which I would guess is only by a small margin better the the Intel HD4600 of the 4200M ...).

Thank you SCARed and everyone else. I decided to replace the laptop with the that includes the 740M graphic card.
