I only got the contents of the Orange Box and Left 4 Dead (although I do own the standard retail versions of a few others). I WISH I had that many games to play.

Mine is soft compared to yours:

Funny thing is, I don't have time to play games much any more.... I'm an addict of sorts I guess. Actually I'm always looking for that diamond in the rough. If you look at my Gamespot collection that I've tracked over the years...

Wow. I'm soft.
I bought 3 valve boxes on steam.
Left 4 Dead. The Orange Box. And a long time ago: The Valve online pack: CS:S, DoD:S, and HL2: DM. It was a deal shortly after HL2 was released. Each has impressed me in an over-the-top kind of way. (I had never played counter strike before, and my friends and I all started playing CSS and DoD and sometimes HL2 : DM on lan, which was the only way to play it).

i have about...15 other non-steam games, not including my console games.

Here is a list to all my steam games too lazy to take screen shot:

My Steam games...I was a very slow adopter...in fact, I was incredibly angry when Half-Life 2 made me go online to validate the installation...
The next two attachments are the window full of shortcuts to games installed on my 320 GB internal drive...and then all the games installed on the internal drive that run under DosBox or special DOS emulators (like Descent XP or the 3DRealms Build games)...
Just like Steam, all of the games run off the hard drive...no optical media necessary...all those games go wherever my laptop goes...Attached Files:

And this is the window full of shortcuts to games installed on my 500 GB USB drive...this is my Steam drive so you'll see a repeat of some of the games from the Steam list...I usually launch from my list of shortcuts and allow the shortcut to run Steam and then run the game...again, all the non-Steam games run without optical media, so wherever the laptop and USB drive go, all those games go...

How do you get it to run of the hard drive? Steam games, AFAIK don't run off USB drives, at least I've never been successful.
-
lol play games much htwingnut? no worries my steam games list is ever growing (imagine the chaos if steam ever died on us XD)
-
Here's mine.
So I have the Orange Box and F.E.A.R. 2. Then I bought just two Steam packs - the Complete id software and all the X-COMs. Love those games.
The relative lack of installed games ATM is due mainly to my nice new desktop + GTX 260 Core 216, which is totally dedicated to games. It's a beautiful sight, having installed almost every game I own on there and NOTHING else. -

As far as the other question, let me state first, that all those games were legally purchased...in fact, I still have the boxes for 90% of them up in the attic...I'm a packrat with my physical and digital media...
In the mid-90's, game developers assumed little HDD space so you usually installed minimal files to the HDD and the rest of the files were streamed from the CD as necessary...for these games, you can make an image of the CD...you can also setup the shortcut to load the image and then run the game executable...single click gaming is amazing...easier than a console...
Most of the newer games assume unlimited (or, at least, excessive) HDD space, so you usually install all the files to the HDD for better performance or you can choose the option to install all game files...the CD/DVD being in the drive is only required for a security check...there are ways to skip that check which I won't discuss because it may be a taboo topic in these forums... -
I'm not trying to advertise for any one developer, BUT...
If you like Diablo-clones, Sacred/Gold and the Spellforce games are quite decent...($10 and $30 respectively, and the $30 includes both Spellforce 2 and its expansion)...also, Silverfall is good although maxing graphics options chokes my 7950 GTX...I'm a sucker for cell-shaded graphics...
If you remember Ultima Underworld, then Arx Fatalis is a real steal at $5...classic dungeon crawl with upgraded graphics (no, it's not Oblivion) and tons of gameplay...
And everyone loves X-Com...I'm not a big fan of Apocalypse, but Steam is the only way I know to get it running...I can't get DosBox to run my original copy...and I have no idea what Interceptor and Enforcer are...but the original and Terror from the Deep (very difficult compared to the original) are classics worth every penny of the $5 that you'll spend...
What's in your Steam Games List?
