So I've been playing Modern Warfare 2 for a few days now. Finished the campaign, and without a doubt it was the best video game campaign I've ever experienced (yes I know it's short, but the quality of it completely makes up for it IMO).
So afterwards I decided to try out the multiplayer. I never played COD4 multiplayer, but I've read all over of people claiming how amazing it was and how it revolutionized online FPS play. However, I frankly have not been blown away by the MW2 multiplayer. I guess the main reasons for me are that:
1. It's hard- obviously this depends completely on the skill of the player, and I really do suck at video games, but nevertheless, it seems like the weapons are almost too powerful- if I'm seen by an enemy before they see me, it's over- 9 times out of 10 I'm dead before I can even begin to try to run or take cover. But then I suppose it is realistic, as it doesn't take too many bullets to kill a person in real life. Nevertheless though, out of every match I've played, I think I've come out with a positive kill/death ratio maybe twice.
2. And aside from that, it just seems, so- ordinary. You have your basic weapons, many of which I can barely keep track of as they're so similar, and you have the standard FPS gametypes (I've always been more of a fan of objective gametypes, and I'm not too thrilled that I have to unlock most of them instead of having them immediately available).
Don't get me wrong, the maps look excellent and the gameplay is very smooth and polished, but I guess I've been looking and looking, yet I can't seem to figure out how the multiplayer for this game is so incredible and revolutionary. Why exactly has it been praised so much? What am I missing here? Anyway, it would be great to hear others opinions on the multiplayer, specifically (and ONLY regarding the actual gameplay- for the love of god, I don't want to hear one more word about no dedicated servers, blah blah- that's irrelevant in this instance, and it'll only lead to arguments and bashing, which I think the Internet has quite enough of as of now)

I think that the draw of the CoD multiplayer is how simple it is. Having played many FPS's in my life CoD's online is very simple. All the guns shoot ropes of bullets, so there is no need to take anything like gravity or wind into consideration.
Don't get me wrong it does take skill (or time) to get good at this game, but as you said all the weapons seem over powered it is because they are all so accurate, you can take out a pistol and shoot a person across the map as long as you point the gun at them.
Well thats basically my point, the game is simple, people like simple, this is why its online is so popular, IMO. -
I personally love how simple it is. I'm not hardcore enough of a gamer to get into all the crazy shooters out there. I just want something simple and fun to play, hence why COD4 was the first game I played online.

by the way- the game is simple, and i for one like that.
its just so super simple. and popular! especially the simpleness though is the best part.

in all seriousness, i was also put off by the locked gametypes, but you unlock them so quickly that it barely matters. by the time you are comfortable with the game to where you understand the mechanics (call of duty is less run&gun than, say, halo, and that can take some adjusting), all the game types will be unlocked.
call of duty is more run THEN gun, but not both at the same time.
i also agree about the guns being ridiculously similar. i unlocked a variety of assault rifles, but i am perfectly happy with the m4a1, since all the assault rifles are similarly effective.
the only super significant differences are across gun classes (shotgun, sniper, submachine gun, pistol, assault rifle)... and the variation within classes is mostly just to allow you to pick what feels better for you, but effectiveness tends to stay pretty constant throughout the gun unlocks. -
All I can think of is it's really fun and falls in the line with playing battlefield regularly for me, lol.
-
Interesting. I guess for me though, the simplicity makes it boring- like I get tired of it after only a few matches, whereas games like Halo I could play online for hours.

if there is any game that is simpler than CoD, it is Halo, for sure.

scoot and shoot, excellent verbage.

I never thought CoD 4 MP was anything special either, nor is MW2. I didn't know what all the fuss was about. I had more fun with Half-Life 2 MP using the grav gun to rip toilets off the wall and hurl them at people.
So despite all the fuss about dedicated servers, go play Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike, or TF2 for a better MP experience. -
I think CoD4 blows MW2's multiplayer out of the water. They set the bar too high, and then tried too hard and ended up with sub-par multiplayer.

I really enjoyed the COD4 multiplayer, especially on servers with 40+ people. It had a chaotic feeling about it.
I also really liked playing on the "SMART" servers, they had some pretty interesting mods.
It was a great experience. -

You can say whatever you want. Heck, you don't even need to put on pants to express your opinions!!
:feels a breeze: -
Just to let you know when I said it was simple I did not mean that in a bad way, just my observation. I have over 10 days logged in CoD4 and probably going to have that or more in MW2. =D

its fun just use cheatengine and you can change your level as high as you want it to go.

it is a simple, tactical game that rewards pacing rather than run and gun. sometimes it is beneficial to move quickly, other times it makes more sense to stop entirely...
HL2 DM on LAN is still the best thing since sliced bread.
the game never really worked right over the internets though. bandwidth i suppose. -
guns are very simple, they all shoot pretty straight, you aim, your gonna hit them. combat is fairly balanced. people like being rewarded for doing good (with the perks). slight level of customization also with the perks that is different than any other game ive played. also there are no classes so you can choose your weapons. which is nice.

so unless you have an intel igp. you get it for free. -
I loved COD4 multiplayer.
I can't get into MW2 though. I brought up the lagometer and its a horrible site. In COD4 I would basically not bother playing if my ping was over 100ms (I would switch to another server etc) but in this game, I doubt my ping is ever under 100.
And there is way too much jitter, the game just feels terribly laggy and imprecise. COD4 was addictive and I always wanted to play 'one more game', but I am pretty much finished with this laggy crap. -
Its too bad anyone outside NA got shafted, because I rarely have lag in any games, maybe 5%, and I usually just leave those. P2P can work, but not on a game like this. My games are usually between 50ms ping and 70ms, which is pretty good, but im pretty much in the smack dab middle of NA, so this is expected. Hopefully dedicated servers will come soon though.

I really do like the gameplay found in Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer. It's really not too hard to play well in my opinion.
Personally, I like playing objective based gamemodes instead of just team deathmatch which I think is pointless, even though I usually end up near the top of the leaderboard I get bored pretty quickly.
So I prefer to play gamemodes like domination, headquarters, and capture the flag. I have my various kits set up for different scenarios and/or maps. This is very important in MW2, you don't want to use SMG's on a large map with great distances.
The main tip that I can give you is to maintain the best situational awareness you possibly can. Don't tunnel vision only on what's in front of you but constantly be panning around looking for threats. Also instead of spriting around like a madman take it slow and walk and crouch. This is especially important when you know there are enemies in the area and when you are turning a corner or going through a doorway.
Many players constantly sprint and as you know it takes a split second to bring your gun sights up right after you stop sprinting. I've killed so many players who decide to run around a corner or through a door instead of slowly approaching the situation. -
what do you think about counter-strike ? which one is more fun ? I've never play CoD multiplayer b4 cuz I'm good with counter strike.... are they both different ?
-
Its fun.......

What I like about it is it's a clean, polished feel. Doesn't feel clunky. That goes a long way for me. That and a rewarding system keeps me playing. Games like CS used to entertain me, but now with less time, I like feeling.. "rewarded" for my time spent. So my hour in CoD4/MW2 is shown by maybe leveling up once or twice..unlocked a weapon..finished a challenge, etc etc.
Those little things to me help, but without solid gameplay to build on, the above doesn't matter. CoD's gunplay is just very well done, using ADS, look & feel and tempo all work well together.
The only thing that I guess I do not like, is other than S&D, most game modes whatever they may be all still feel like a deathmatch rather than objective based..this is where Battlefield works better to me..I hate the fact everything is K/D ratio on CoD. (especially b/c mine sucks haha) -
CTF in my favorite. -

Answer to #1: Stop running and hiding. It's a shooter. I sucked at the beginning too but after playing daily I became more skilled.
