    The difference is nothing.
    Just a smart marketing gimmick.

Nothing other than more GDDR5 RAM. 1.5GB is more than enough anyways

Could it easily be upgradeable as a DIY or do they already come "pre-packaged" in that form?

Well, you can't upgrade the 1.5GB to 3GB by adding memory chips to the V-Card... but some notebooks allow an upgrade of the entire card. But as long as you'll be gaming on only 1 monitor, then 1.5GB is plenty at 1920x1080 Resolution. If you go above the 1080P mark, then you might need more V-Ram. But doubtful.

More than 1.5GB VRAM on a high performance mobile gpu is a marketing gimmick.
    It does nothing for performance.
It would only be effective if you were using a setup with multiple monitors, and even then, the gpu would run out of bandwidth before reaching 3GB.

In short... you will probably never need 3GB of VRAM on that GPU.
    1.5GB is more than enough.

If they're the same price or very close in price, might as well go with the 3GB version; if not, stick with 1.5GB.
