I've re-played a lot of games from my childhood, but one I'm very curious about still escapes me. My recollection of it may not be great, I didn't play it much because of how hard it was, It was most likely pre-1995 if I am not mistaken, on a PC.
It was an adventure game, I think, played mostly from a birds-eye view (similar to the LttP screenshot below). You were some sort of knight/soldier/adventurer, and I think you started out in a castle and had to make your way around the nearby lands, sent on some quest by the king/magician/etc. I don't remember the story at all.
You would fight people when you came across them, I think by clicking rapidly on them, and they would turn into a small pile of copper when they died. This didn't happen much as most enemies killed me first. There were possibly monsters and other non-human enemies in possibly caves and stuff.
I don't really have much more information than that, feel free to ask questions or give suggestions. Thanks in advance!

That is Zelda a Link to the Past (1992) It was the first one on the Super Nintendo, where you go from light to dark worlds. I read an article once that said it was one of the 100 best games ever, and it is pretty good.

And yes, that game is awesome.
But I'm not asking about Zelda. -
Just my 0.02 usd. -
@ OP: I have no idea, I was born in 91 and wasn't gaming when I was 4 lol, good luck. -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I'm with Tree_Burner - it sounds like you're thinking of an Ultima game. It's not exactly a perfect description, but I don't know of any other game or series that is more likely to fit it.

Another vote for Ultima.

Something that looked like this...more "spritey"
It may not have been that popular...I just got a floppy from somewhere... -
Was the combat turn-based or real-time? I was thinking from your post it was real-time clicking-based combat (Diablo-ish combat system), but maybe I misunderstood.

Still possible it might be Ultima IV or V...
I remember when I was a kid Costco always used to have a bunch of vaguely Ultima-clone RPG's (as far as I could tell from the screenshots on the boxes). The only one I vaguely remember was "The Magic Candle" series, though there were others. -
There are screenshots of Ultima IV on GOG.com: Ultima? 4: Quest of the Avatar - GOG.com
But that's so primitive I can't imagine a Link to the Past comparison. Same with Ultima V: Let's Play Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (PC) Part 0 - YouTube -

Was it "Dragon Warrior"? (Released as "Dragon Quest" in some countries")
Here is a map of the "World" http://fatedtoend.com/sites/fatedtoend.com/files/wordpress/dw_postermap_front.jpg -
Man, that Dragon Warrior map really brought back memories, but I the OP suggested it was more of an action-RPG I think?
Could it be Mordor? I don't quite remember if that was action RPG:
Demise: Ascension, Rise of the Ku'Tan and Mordor: The Depths of Dejenol games and forum
What's this OLD (possibly DOS) game?
