I posted this on the Skyrim discussion and it got me wondering, what's YOUR Game of the Year?
Here's mine:
-
Skyrim. Skyrim.
SKYRRIIIIIMMMMMMM.
Arkham City wins my runner-up prize. Battlefield and Modern Warfare are just rehashes of the same old, same old. -
skyrimmmmmm!!!the best game!!!
-
witcher 2. But it won't win, its not very mainstream.
-
I'd also vote for The Witcher 2.
-
I just havent got into Skyrimm at the moment, maybe becuase I know I havent got the time to dedicate to it at the moment (Im 'gaming' for like 2-3 times a week at probably less than an hour or so each time due to work / familly life at the moment), so whilst I want to like Skyrimm, I just cant get into it.
Battlefield 3 is fantastic, but if Im not playing it it quickly becomes forgettable. Maybe thats just because its the same as other incarnations (as someone else has said).
Witcher 2 is sitting on my hard drive, but I did only grab it last week (from a Steam sale) and I havent yet played it.
Batman Arkham City is the game that Im playing at the moment, and thats really sucking me in. This is the one I cant put down.
Other games Ive played this year are Dragon Age 2 (completed it, but dissapointed, it was not what I was expecting) and Crysis 2 (same again).
My game of the year will have to be Arkham City, though I think if I'd got into either the Witcher 2 or Skyrimm then one of them would get it! -
Skyrim, then BF3 & Batman AC. -
1-Skyrim
2-Witcher 2- runner up -
witcher 2
batman ac -

Hi all, I saw this topic and i think game of the year for me will be SWTOR and then battlefield 3.
I'm not into magic and all those medieval stuffs that hard to make sense, so skyrim is out of the window for me. -
I have a hard time electing anything. I have played a lot of BF3, but like others have said, it's somewhat forgettable. In a few years I doubt I will be playing it like I did BF2 year over year.
-
Skyrim. Most Definitely
-
1. Skyrim
2. Batman Arkham City
3. The Witcher 2
4. Assassin's Creed Revelations
5. LA Noire (PC)
6. Dead Island
7. MW3
These are my favorite games of the year right now. -
Stupid question, the answer is so obvious - Skyrim. Maybe BF3 a close runner up, haven't gotten around to playing Arkham City yet. And no The withcer 2 definitely not even close. I did not like it that much, Skyrim is better IMO. But then again i am an RPG n00b. Started this year with DA:O(after asking a few NBR gamers about what would be a good game for me to make an entry into RPGs, I got Fable and DA:O as the answers, played them both and have trying to play as much RPGs i can ever since)

Without a doubt, Skyrim. Even dispute all of it's bugs it offers the most bang for your buck in terms of replayability, graphics, game play, story, etc. I can go on and on about how great this game is but I don't need to here, everyone who enjoys the game surely feels the same way
-
The Witcher 2 if appealed to more people would probably win it, but I don't think its GOTY.
Skyrim is my first choice for GOTY with BF3 a close second. -
Skyrim, even though I get a crash to desktop every once in a while
-
Uncharted 3 (Oh yes, I just went there).
Followed up by BF3. -
For me it's The Witcher 2. The combat is refreshingly exciting and engaging for an RPG, the voice acting is excellent, the atmosphere is refreshingly George-R-R-Martin-esque mature, and the level of refinement for a small developer is mind-boggling. Oh yeah, it's also the only major game of the year to be distributed DRM-free (via GOG).
Skyrim looks really good, but I haven't gotten it yet (suspect Santa is bringing it), though I prefer games with a strong central plot instead of a sandbox, so I'm suspecting I'll like TW2 better.
I thought Deus Ex: HR would be my GOTY, but it's been a let-down. The atmosphere is great, but the combat is a little uninspiring, some of the voice acting is downright terrible, and the game is plagued by a crashing glitch that makes it nearly unplayable. -

I just loved the series. -

Definitely not Skyrim, I am still having performance issues, and it seems to just get worse as Bethesda "patches" it. However, from what I have seen we are probably going to end up MW3 being GOTY, solely from sales figures (across all systems). Although, I am going to wait for The Witcher 2 to go on sale again on Steam and pick that up, it looks really good.

Skyrim... its the only game this year that I can play for what I feel was 10-15 minutes and look up at the clock and its 6-8 hours later.
Skyrim is far from perfect, and certainly far from state-of-the-art in terms of technology, but the storytelling, lore and sense of wonder you get when experiencing the game is second-to-none.
Sure, there were some fun games this year, but nothing even in the league of Skyrim.
Example: Witcher 2 is a good game and has superior technology, but the world never pulls me in like Skyrim did... (I do not forget the flow of time in the real world) Witcher 2 also never quite feels as epic IMHO.
Honestly, I think Skyrim is the best game in the past 5 years easily.
PS> I am not sure how a GTX 460m has performance issues with Skyrim given that my 9800mGS runs it without difficulty... (I just have to turn down the settings.) -

I can pretty much max everything else I want to play, so it makes me upset.

Battlefield 3 all the way.
-
NBA2k12 for me i play 24/7

If MW3 wins, I would be like any one of the twilight series winning an oscar.

Although there were good games out this year, nothing that changed the scene. Nothing was jaw-dropping or took the community by swarm.
Isn't it disappointing that CS:S, TF2, and WoW are still some of the most played games despite their age?
We need something refreshing and innovative. -
I have to bring it up again.

Realistically, from the 2011 games I've played nothing compares with Skyrim so far. -
Skyrim. The best all round game I have played since GTA San Andreas.
-
edit: OMG, it costs $36! LOL!
I would buy it if it were like $3 and give it to someone as a gag gift. But $36? -
Diablo 3 beta is my pick
-
RPG: Witcher 2
FPS: Crysis 2/Rage -
Portal 2 is my #1
-
Yup, like many Skyrim is my game of the year too!
-
Arkham City!
Even better than the first. Smoother, more gadgetry, and great story.
I haven't played skyrim, not quite my genre. Not so much the RPG aspect, more the dungeons and dragons stuff. That said I have seen screen shots and it is a good looking game. -
"Witcher!! Witcher!! Witcher!!!"(quote from the screaming crowd in the arena). Yes, I mean witcher 2 wins my vote.
-
1. Skyrim
2. Witcher 2
3. Deus Ex: HR
4. DoW 2: Retribution -
Yeah, I forgot about Witcher and DE:HR. They are also up there on the list.
-
another vote for skyrim with DE:HR a distant second
-
Tied between witcher 2 and Arkham city. Can't really think of any other releases I played that top those.
-
My GOTY goes to Deus Ex: Human Revolution with Skyrim as a close second place.
If it was using modern tech better then maybe i could have bumped Skyrim to 1st place.
But if i where to count console only games too then sadly The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword > the competition. -
skyrim is great but most played was League of Legends for me
-
Skyrim here for me
-
I haven't stopped laughing about that game yet. If someone hasn't, they really need to sit down and watch some game footage. Absolute classic. -
Game of the Year?
Batman: Arkham City ...second place for me is BF3 -
Deus Ex very well could be my #1, if they didn't outsource those boss fights.
-
Won't happen, but I would like to see
Bastion
or
Magicka
or maybe even
From Dust
on the short list for GotY. None of those titles are revolutionary, but they're fun with a good amount of polish and detail. And the price was definitely right.
I haven't played (purchased) Skyrim, but I have played BF3 and Batman: Arkham City on the 360. Excellent games with huge scope, but I view them more as expansions on a theme than new games. I'm tired of seeing publishers/developers awarded for, in my opinion, evolutionary titles.
But GotY is probably defined by much more than innovation and value...and since that's the case, the usual suspects (outside The Witcher 2 which I haven't played, but loved the first one) probably are deserving. You can tell that all involved with the projects poured their hearts and souls into them. And of the games listed, I would choose Arkham City.
