Hey i need some help...i just purchased the new Dell 17 inch inspirion notebook and I love it. I need some help finding the drivers to update it and is the a recommended driver instead of the one from nvidias website because i tried dling it from them and instlaling and it kept giving me an error...I was also wonder what settings for the video card inside the nvidia control panel under 3D settings since my 3D was towards Quality, wheather to put it balanced or towards performance as welll as the Image settings bar since its on Quality and wheather or not to put it on performance or best performance because i wnat to get the best out of the vid card without having any spikes or fps drops in games. Thanks...in advance.

The nvidia ones are made for their desktop cards, that is why they won't work with your computer. Personally, I use the Dell stock drivers, as I don't see a performance increase with other drivers; and I can't get the LCD to turn off when the lid is closed with non-Dell drivers. If you go to Dell's driver downloads page and select your system or put in your service tag it will bring up the drivers for your system. You can download and install the one listed for the 7900GS and it should work perfectly.

I have tried both, and other than a different control panel interface, I didn't notice a difference at all. It should be noted that I got my 3dmark scores using the laptopvideo2go 91.28 drivers. I haven't run 3dmark with the stock Dell drivers that I am using now.

Here's what I posted in the updateing drivers thread,

" I guess I'll post this here. I'm trying to update my nVidia drivers for my E1705 7900GS to the new Forceware Version: 84.63. They claim this version now "supports" the dell E1705 so I figure why not.

However as I ran the setup I get an error message saying, "The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatatible with your current hardware". So I went full out and uninstalled the old drivers, used driver cleaner pro, and a regcleaner. I tried again in safe mode and still the same problem.
    "

After trying a few things and nothing working I decided to try the official nVidia 91.31 drivers as some people at notebookforums.com said they were using them. However I got the same error message as before. I finally just re-downloaded the Dell e1705 7900gs drivers dated 6/6/06. That seemed to work.

That's pretty stupid that they claim it adds support for the notebooks and then it still doesn't work. I would bet that if you used a modified .inf they would work, but it's still more the principle that makes it pointless.

If more people find that the driver from Nvidia doesn't work, I'll remove it from the guide. It is pointless if it doesn't work, I agree.

I got it to install, but you need to download the inf file from laptopvideo2go. I got about the exact same 3dmark score as I did with the ones from ltv2go so I guess it was pretty much a waste of a half hour.

I'm curious why the LaptopVideo2Go 84.63 drivers were released on 4-25-06 yet the nVidia 84.63 drivers were released 7-05-06? I don't have much experience with the custom drivers so maybe I'm missing something.

Drivers from www.tweaksrus.com are also very good. A popular one is 84.56 v 2.40 which is what I am using and works very well.

I wouldn't use Omega Nvidia drivers though, they are outdated. Check the updating video drivers guide at the top of the forum for more options.

Modded drivers don't really fix problems or issues, they just provide performance tweaks for image quality and increased fps, etc. That is, unless your stock drivers work best for you. ;)
