Basically, I need a new PC game.

Ok, so fresh off beating Call of Duty 4 (PC, With all the perks unlocked and such at lv.55) and playing every Call of Duty since (PC), as well as the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series (Xbox 360) , I'm a bit tired of any combination of historical or modern day first person shooters.

I used to like all RTS games but Company of Heroes alone is enough for me. (I can't play two RTS's at a time... Know what I mean??? Yes, ok  )

So I'm trying to find a game with a deep Singleplayer experience (Multiplayer = Cod4/Coh).

    Ones I'm Not Interested In:

Crysis (I tried the demo, besides not really running that great in comparison COD4 which runs so smoothly with Ultra Textures and High Specular Map Resolution as well as High Map Resolution at 1280 res, I didn't like the gameplay that much) - Maybe if I had some extreme hardware I could see past that, but as it stands, the demo was a bit boring to be honest).

World In Conflict (Too many RTS's at once gets boring for me, I didn't dig the demo all that much either)

Bioshock ( Played it somewhere on 360, not my kind of game. I stopped after I got onto rapture and some little thing scared the **** out of me... ) - My idea of movies and video games don't include them making me nervous and terrifying me, thus I can't stand horror movies & games. Yeah, I said it, I won't lie :( , save the namecalling... lol

Gears Of War - Overrated, I stopped playing it on 360 half way through.

    Supreme Commander (Yawn)

Stalker (I haven't played, but, See Bioshock?)

Probably Interested in these, need feedback: (Which One Of These Is The 'Best' in your opinion)

Command & Conquer 3 (Maybe If the Singleplayer is entertaining... I could forget about Coh for a while)

Unreal Tournament 3 ( The reviews are good, but if its too much of the same 'typical FPS', + bad Singleplayer, I'll pass for now )

The Orange Box ( Some of you may be wondering If I'm an idiot for not having this already and complaining about variety in PC games, but I purchased Portal on Steam separately from the 'Box'. I still want to try HF2, HF2:1, HF2:2 and TF2 (Awesome value BTW,). It seems great seeing as I want a good Singleplayer experience but I didn't like the original Half Life (It creeped me out), so if it's anything like Doom 3, Bioshock or the original, It's just not my kind of game. )

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent (Any Good?)

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The (Never got into RPG's, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, I really liked a while back. If it's action oriented & fun, sure maybe)

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas (Will it pale in comparison to Cod4?)

Feel free too add in what ever you'd like...

So, what the heck should I buy?

don't know much about C&C3 single player, multi was fun for me, at least

ut3 is pretty much ut2004 imo, the single player was pretty much just you and your team vs bots, nothing really in depth...

the orange box is awesome, however the single player will be kinda short as you've already played Portal, and Ep2 isn't long either.

Oblivion is good fun, I'd recommend this one on the list out of the others

another one to look at is Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl, too

rainbox six vegas won't disappoint if you're into semi-realistic stealth/shooter games. oblivion is another good choice and a nice way to get back into RPG's. i'd recommend FEAR but since you don't like bioshock i doubt you'll like it. the chronicles of riddick is an amazing game. nice cinematics and good pace that'll keep you from getting bored all the way through.

Psh, Elder Scrolls for sure. It will give you 50+ hours and it's definitely a great game to go through again (and again).

Definately go for Half Life 2 and the episodes. Half Life 2 is in my opinion one of the best games of all time, and the episodes are mind-blowing as well. Don't worry, it's much easier to get into than the original Half Life.

The graphics may be slightly dated but the artwork and design is second to none. Not to mention the fantastic gameplay, characters and storyline.

If you really need to avoid anything scary, then play the "Ravenholm" level in the daytime. Some people find it scary, but I was having too much fun with the gravity gun to notice anything. Plus, I love horror movies. :D

For a more recent game, you could try Oblivion. It's a very deep experience, and very easy to get sucked in to. Very immersive.

Bioshock should be the big recommendation here, but since you hate horror, it's a tough call. For anyone else I would definately recommend it, due to the great storyline and gameplay. Download the demo if you're interested, it should impress you.

I'd say Orange Box. Personally, I think the Half Life games are nothing like Doom 3 and not creepy at all. Stay away from UT3, it isn't really good at all IMHO, just a rehash of UT 2004....

    half life creeped you out?

half life 2 has *some* scary scenes- a few scattered places throughout plus one area in particular.

hl2 ep 1 also has some *intended to be scary* sections that succeed in fun gameplay but are only vaguely scary.

still, if the original half life freaked you out, hl2 might have SOME places that freak you out also, but mostly you should be OK. Its definitely not on the same scare level as doom 3 or bioshock.

Orange box is hands down the most crucial gaming package available. Portal is a short classic, as is Team Fortress 2, and the half life 2 series thus far is simply phenomenal.

There is no reason to lay down cash for anything until you get the orange box.

you also did well by going through CoD4, as im sure you know by now ;)

i personally didn't like rainbow six vegas, but I am a rainbow six purist and i was looking for a different kind of game...

you might enjoy oblivion, i am actually just checking it out now, I installed the game and the two expansions just a few days ago, ill get around to actually playing it eventually. i hear good things about it.

splinter cell games are good, i might wait till the next one (eta a few months? i think?)

c&c3 is definitely a fun game, but I don't know if it stands up to the more serious RTS games. It might, I'm just not sure. c&c3 definitely has a somewhat "cartoony" aspect to it. Still, its balanced and fun for sure.

I noticed that you mentioned Splinter Cell Double Agent. That game is a disaster on PC, Ubisoft messed up badly there. However, SC: Chaos Theory is perhaps one of the best PC games I have. They really went all out on the PC version. (this is because SCCT is made by Ubisoft Montreal, and SCDA by Ubisoft Shanghai)

Oblivion GOTY along with other mods make this one holy crap huge game. and if you don't cheat and trample everyone with God-mode, its really fun. I'm a sucker for eye candy and this games solves that problem too.

Short, lol, you realize Cod4 is like 6-8 Hours, right?

From what I understand (IGN, Gametrailers):
    HL2 : 15 Hours
    Ep1 : 4 Hours
    Ep2 : 4 Hours

If thats correct, I'm perfectly fine with 23 + (+for me) Hours of gameplay.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is something like 400 Hours to complete it fully.

Both are about $60 bucks before taxes at my closest Canadian Retailer. Dam, I'm confused now... Which one? Meh, I'll probably just randomly pick between the two.

If you haven't played HL2 or any of the episodes then this isn't a tough choice (from my end at least) , get The Orange Box.

If your not hardcore into RTS games then you should have a blast with C&C3 (both single/multi).

Get the Orange Box without a second thought. But I would not suggest AOE3. Seriously didn't find it as engaging as AOE2. UT3 - have to to try yet, but then going by the comments above, I'll probably rent it before I buy. I love Serious Sam, although it's reeeally old now, and have played first and second encounters twice over. The multiplayer deathmatch is quite decent if you ask me. Dunno what the others thought of the game.

Storyline looks engaging and the graphics look good too...

There is a demo you can try before you buy.

whats BioShock scary???? its boring and repetitive and all you do is fight the same old badies all the way through - but when you first see a Big daddy thats cool

id have to say Oblivion you cant go wrong with over 400Hours gameplay im not to keen on HL i dont know what it is though, might have something to do with the disgrace that was the Orange Box on PS3 waaaaaaay to many bugs and having to wait 5minutes while it saves every 5seconds was annoying as well, i might have a look at it on PC though if i get the laptop that i want (look at "Payment Question (UK)")

Yes, I don't think there is really another game out there that is as good as Half Life 2. It really is a masterpiece.

Remember to turn up your resolution, since the Source engine is highly optimized and a few years old now. When the source engine was released, it blew all other games out of the water in terms of performance and quality.

Yeah. I second the HL2- but remember, it is the origional FPS that all those other ones go off of, essentially.

If you're looking for a different STRUCTURE and replayability, the Rainbow series can be set up- you use the same maps but the scenarios change. HL is step-by-step like most FPS's- linear storyline essentially. Scenario -based storylines might have more playability for ya. Demo it.
I'm subscribing to this thread- I haven't played some of these and I wanna hear more!

I have to weigh in on the side of Chronicles of Riddick. An excellent game which for some reason did not capture the attention of most buyers. This is one of the few movie spin offs which was actually great, better than the movie for entertainment value.

I got it a few years ago and have played through it a couple of times since, and will likely do so again in another year or two.

I wish the developers (from Sweden I think) would have gotten the Aliens/Predator license contract - because this game is oozing with atmosphere. You can do most of the game without using guns if you wish - the stealth element is very well done.

Full disclosure though: I hate the HL2 games. I've tried to like them but cannot bring myself to finish any of them.

someone here mentioned the chronicles of riddick: escape from butcher bay, one of best games i've played besides half-life 1 & 2, resident evil 4, deus ex and ninja gaiden, this game is a must for every pc gamer, true it's a 2004 game but the graphics still dazzle, thr sound effects, music and voice acting are still second to none. the story is great and you always want to know what's gonna happen next but mind you it's not about saving the world or anything it's just about a hardened criminal who's trying to escape a high-tech prison, the gameplay is a mix of shooting, stealth, interacting and hand to hand combat and they all work fantastically, variety is all over the place. too bad the game didn't get the attention it deserved..
i'm kinda surprised bioshock did scare you! cause i didn't find it to be scary at all, it's just a bunch of crazy people trapped in a underwater city, anyway i don't recommend it, three or so hours and you pretty much have seen all there's to it, things get repetetive very fast..
btw all the games you've mentioned are worth playing/trying, so it pretty much depends on what kinda of game you're looking for...

Those times are about right. However, HL2 can be finished in 1.5 hours :D (speedrun demo)
    - Orange Box is a must have, awesome series. If you haven`t played HL1, do it now, and then play HL2 and the following episodes. It`s well worth it. Must have played each of them more than 5 times by now...so I`m awaiting anxiousely for the 3rd and last episode.
    - Also second on Serious Sam. Must be one of the best games I`ve ever played.Reall down-right shoot first, shoot later fps. Literally thousands of enemies ,each different from the others ,tricks, and humourous lines from the character.
    - Also, I recommend Timeshift, as time controlling ability is somethin super cool :D
    - Unreal Tournament was also well worth it..intense gaming and cool modes(I`m a huge fan on the genre)
-I WILL NOT recommend Bioshock and Crysis since in my opininion they`re boring and crap.there, I said it.
