    Depending on the laptop you get, I would recommend the new Alienware 17 r2, I mean it has a i7 6700hq and 970m for about $1250-1400 that is if you don't mind buying off of eBay. Or brand new they are about 1600. 970m overclocked can catch up with 980m easily. And if display is 1080p it will definitely run any game for awhile. And the good thing about Alienware is the graphics cards are changeable to just about whatever, (mxm) so that's a plus for when you need to upgrade the gpu. It's quite easy actually. Cause with alienware.. There are no limits.

    Probably Q2 of next year like they said above. IMO, get a Sager. I bought my 8170 in 2011 and I've been able to upgrade my GPU to a 680m 4g, it's still going pretty strong. I can play most games on high and I think I still have room to upgrade my CPU if I really wanted to...although I'll probably just wait until next year and get a whole new Sager. But yeah, if you want the best bang for your buck AND have a quality mobile gaming machine - go Sager.

    Do they really look like office laptops? http://i.imgur.com/EaCeUhr.jpg http://www.xoticpc.com/laptop/NP9758/sager-np9758-photo-005.jpg

    Personally, I don't think so...

    Honestly, if you're buying a gaming laptop, you shouldn't be buying it for appearance... With that said, Clevos can still look very sexy.

    MSI has promised upgrades, and delivered already - 9XXm upgrades kits for previous models.

    For the GT80S / GT72 MSI has promised 2 generations of upgrades. Pascal, and ?

    It's the best organized upgrade process from all the manufacturers. Includes MXM card, heat spreader / head exchanger + BIOS / vBIOS.

    Here is the upgrade video for the current MSI 980m upgrades.

    This is cool and all.. But I have yet to see a laptop from msi where 2 screws leads you to the whole system (m17x r4 had this years ago) and in terms of upgrading I can easily put a 980 m in my laptop no issue. Plus msi laptops look like hot wheels cars.. Way to much silver, (unnecessary plastic in front of you) and no need to buy a new heat sink for me.. Cause with Afew thermal pad adjustments, I can use it with 900 series graphics cards. Plus Alienware fx is amazing. :p

    Hmm.. Performance...

    Well here's what a review of the 8170 said (right here on notebook review)
    Overview
    * PROS are nice.
    * Excellent performance
    * Brilliant high contrast display with 3D options
    * Stays very cool
    * Keyboard designed for gaming
    *

    * CONS << those cons
    * (Uncomfortable touchpad)
    * (Expensive as configured)
    * (Bland design without custom skin)

    Bland design.. Touchpad not comfy? Nope.. Not for me. Alienware baby!

    Oh come on. You had to spoil the fun. I was beginning to enjoy the thread because it felt like the "good old days" when an op asks a simple question but the thread turns into a war between Alieneware vs Sager (or AMD vs Nvidia) fanboys.
    Sadly much less chance of this happening now. :(

    But yeah coming back to OP, i hope you are aware that there is a GTX 980 desktop card for laptops (blame Nvidia stupid naming) which has just been announced and the laptops should be available soon. The actual refresh of the entire line is likely to be the new pascal architecture. Which is expected next year in Q2. Performance wise pacal is expected to be a big improvement over current architecture. Its is speculated that 1080m (or whatever it is called) should be slightly better than 980m sli, but dont qoute me on that.

    So it depends upon your need, Personally i would suggest to to wait if possible, because apart from pascal there is one more factor that is directx 12. There is not much real life performance figures available so far to establish its effects on the setup. Things should be much more clear about this by the time pascal comes out.

    GTX 980 (desktop version for notebooks) coming very soon, already available in some models. Reportedly there will be a smaller MXM version soon as well.

    It is not. That is the R1, which was the last model to have a socketed CPU and MXM GPU. The R2 and R3 are BGA.

    Link to this info about the small form MXM? I'm assuming compatible with my machine? Wouldn't it still require an additional power source? I know my machine doesn't have that additional cable.

    150W is apparently standard MXM size. 200W (or 185W whatever it is) is larger than standard MXM size, but fits in MXM slot.

    Forget it then. Wait for either Pascal or AMD with HBM. But really wait until other chumps buy AMD and report if there are any serious issues. Don't be the chump, the guinea pig for what may likely be another AMD failure.

    I feel like if u just find an alienware m17x r4 for cherap on ebay (with 7970m) You will be able to pretty much play anything at the moment maxed out, (i get 50-60fps in bf4 vsync on 1600x900 native res) and also have the upgrade ability, throw in a 3920xm cpu, then just wait next year, im guessing the new cards from nvidia will have the same mxm design aswell, therefore you should be able to upgrade it with one. Unless you want to wait half a year to get a laptop.

    Or you could buy one of the new Clevo laptops with an amazing Skylake desktop processor, a DESKTOP GPU, and an amazing FHD IPS or QHD IPS panel that will be able to play games amazingly well at the native resolution, and V-Sync off so you don't get any input lag. Could always upgrade it to a good AMD card in the future if they happen to release a good MXM card eventually.

    I would avoid any laptop with a 7970m, I've been seeing so, so many dead 7970ms recently.

    Clevo is the way to go. :vbthumbsup:
