Just want to get an idea of when people here will purchase a new Santa Rosa & DX10 notebook. I know some people are very eager to get their hands on one right now but there are others that are trying to hold out on purchasing one until the right one comes along.

depends on what hits the market. I don't think there's a need for another yr. A lot can change until then power wise. A lot of my gamer friends are getting tired of the heat and bulkiness with their gaming laptops. We're slowly moving to small mobile notebooks with decent video performance and power desktops. The price equals out and makes for good eye candy and better performance. =) Why spend 4,500 for a laptop when u can get a nice laptop and a pc hooked up to a 1080p 42" lcd.

I need a laptop before August. I am going to buy a Dell Latitude D630 or Lenovo Thinkpad T61 almost as soon as it is available.
-
Well, my currently lappy is treating me fine. All my gaming is done on my desktop, which is very futureproof. I think i will wait for the technology to mature a bit more, get cheaper, etc. Then I will consider it upgrading my laptop.
-
I'll buy it whenever they come out with the 8800go (or other high-end DX10 equivalent), which will hopefully be in the August-October range.
-
Once the MacBook Pro is refreshed with Santa Rosa, I'll buy it.
I don't really care about DX10, since I'll be doing all gaming on my desktop. -
I m still holding out for the ATI HD 2600 mobility... just wanna compare between the 2 and make my decision by then..
Edit: Think of it.. maybe not.. Since the time frame of the 45nm Core is just around... guess i ll let the price settle and get the new core.. 6 more months of waiting.................................................................. -
If I were in the market right now, I'd be looking at sometime this summer. Since I'll be OK for a while though, I probably won't be seriously looking until next year when Montevina systems start make their way to the market.
I think this summer will be exciting for those of you who are looking to get a gaming notebook though. -
I'll be looking at getting whatever replaces the current Inspiron e1405/640m. Something with a X3100, or 8200Go/8300Go would be nice.

probably not getting the Santa Rosa platform. I am happy with what I have now and see no need to buy new just to buy new. I think my notebook will serve its mobile gaming purpose until the next platform comes out in a few years.
-
I'll be waiting till the prices drops down and MS releases Vista SP1 or SP2? and count the Vista drivers stability as well.
Then I'll go for Asus gaming lappy 15.4" -
How about never (on Santa Rosa at least)? My NB is perfectly fine and will be until at least Penryn or Montevina
-
im waiting till october 2007 as the cebit to be held in turkey is sure to showcase something new and also low prices
and the asus model im intrested in would have been through the first wave of refreshes too -
I'll turn my notebook into DX10 as soon as I can.
-
Im planning on running my macbook pro until it dies. I have always bought a laptop that is overkill for my needs, so I dont see me upgrading anytime soon.

I'm currently waiting for the Santa Rosa refresh of the Fujitsu LifeBook T4215 tablet PC. As soon as it's on sale I plan to buy it, but I have no idea when that is. I'm hoping its sometime in May-June so that's what I voted.
-
Well I only just recently bought mine so I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon.
It's unlikely I will play many games aimed at the DX10 market..I suck at FPS and I don't really like Oblivion type games either. I play RTS games and online games. I really doubt they will produce a DX10 only MMO for a few years yet as they will limit their potential customer base if they do. -
Sometime next year not on the list>?
-
I want a T7300/+ with a Go 8600/+ (or Mobility HD 2600/+).
unfortunately i dont have too much options in my country,so ill have to wait to get the price right.. -
I would suspect the best time for buying a Santa Rosa and DX10 equipped laptop will be sometimes mid-next year. As the first wave (generation) of dx10 cards dies out and making the 2nd gens cheaper yet more power (while utilizing the full power of dx10), and also price will be dramatically lower.
-
Early to mid July is going to be when the majority of Santa Rosa laptops rear their heads. That's probably when I'm getting my new computer.
-
Apparently they are making a new gen of video cards for DX10.1 slated for next year. I might find myself waiting for that as i want to get 2+ years out of my notebook.
-
I'm waiting for a 14.1" with an 8600 Go. So basically the refresh of the Asus A8JS. Hopefully it'll be out before fall semester starts.
-
-
put an option in the poll when your current laptop dies, cause thats when i'll get one. hopefully not for a long time.
-
AHHHH SO UNFAIR...by summer it will be one year that i have had my laptop...AND ALREADY IM LUSTING over new ones...
i want a Centrino Pro notebook, but i just dont have the money
Dx10 doesnt really matter to me, at least not until the majority of games require cards that support Dx10 -
-
I doubt if there will be ever a 8800 for mobile as such, due to power, heat constraints.Well,it may not be impossible but unlikely..
Very good chance is 65nm shrink will bring a 8800 class gpu to mobiles,we dont know much abt that either atm.. -
Just ordered my 14" Zepto (6224W), with 512Mb 8600GT, 1440x900 dislpay, etc etc. Should arrive by beginning of june.

So this time around zepto is first to market with the new dx10 14 inch. -
I'll be waiting til around November to puchase my next notebook when everything is ironed out hopefully(vista,dx10/mobile,11n). In the meantime I'll be building a new desktop this summer.
-
I probably will buy a napa with insane rebate instead. Since santa rosa is not a huge improvement over napa. Although they bump it to 800 MHz FSB,they are still using DDR2-667, which does not utilize the higher FSB speed. Also the performance of Nvidia 8600M series GPU is likely between that of 7600/7700 and 7900s.
I am considering wait for the Montevina Platform that have will Penryn quad-core CPU and possibly DDR3-800. For now, i could buy a laptop around $1200 with decent performance. it should last about 2-3 years. -
8600M-GT performance is supposably double that of the go7600GT
As stated by Nvidia themselves.
Oh, and the HD2600m from AMD/ATI has already been benched, and it's pretty darn impressive! it's well over double the performace of the x1600 in 3Dmark06, and gets about the performance of my desktop's x1950xt. But these are only benches, and to me, I'll need to play it, to believe it.
I'm in for a new laptop right before 2008, probebly a few weeks before 2008 I'll be ordering a new notebook. And I'm definately not in it for the crappy santa rosa, I'm in it for the DX10 graphics, and hopefully by then, the drivers will all be finalized and we'll see some non-biased benchmarks. Also, by then I bet you will be able to get an HD2600 or 8600m laptop for under $1200usd with nice specs. -
I second this.
-
8600m has pixel shader 4.0, 7600 pixel shader 3.0.. only difference.
you are so optimistics
-
After reading around
I'll be waiting for till Penryn released, with final Wifi 802.11 N standards and WiMax as well -
I MIGHT skip Santa Rosa and just wait until the next platform comes around... Ever since DX10 hardware came out, notebook manufacturers have been focusing too much on the GPU but not on the battery life. The battery life on the new Santa Rosa notebooks are still the same or worse. Hopefully the Montevina platform will improve battery life with the support of Intels 45nm processor Penryn.
I guess Im stuck with my POS desktop till 2008 rolls around. :[ -

There's only so much that can be done for power consumption; battery technology hasn't gone anywhere for quite some time, and until we get something more efficient and better than what we have now (Li-ion), we're not going to see any significant gains.
While it may be true that Santa Rosa notebooks tend to have the same or a bit less battery life than the previous Centrino Duo platform-based notebooks, I don't see it as a bad thing - using only a bit more power, performance has received a decent boost. So, notebook hardware is more power efficient. -
edit: actually that is more than double, I was comparing to the 3dmark scores of a 7700.

i'm going to buy a notebook before august whether i find one exactly how i want or not. i'm really looking for this line-up...
14-15" screen (hopefully WUXGA)
2.2 c2d, 4mb L2, 800mhz fsb
2gb 677mz ddr2
100gb or more 7200rpm
abgn wireless with bluetooth
vista ultimate
some kind of discrete graphics (hopefully a 256 or 512mb nvidia 8m series)
if all this was in a tablet then even better, but i know it won't be. i think the dell d830 is PERFECT except for the lack of discrete graphics, but i assume it's just a matter of time before those nvidia cards are released. i don't care about dx10, but it looks like the only discrete cards for santa rosa are dx10. santa rosa doesn't look like a HUGE leap, but if i have to get a laptop for school anyway, why not get the latest? i want it to last throught college, and i don't want to have to upgrade later. -

Now that the Asus G1s is officially out (detailed on at least their US and Swiss websites), as well as being offered for sale at Swiss suppliers (they don't have any listed in stock yet) - ASAP. The end of May and I order!
8600M GT woohoo! -
I am in for the Asus C90S. According to the pre-order price, u can get C2D E6600 2.4 4MB L2 1033MHZ, 2GB DDR2-667, 80-120GB HDD(i prefer 5400rpm),and a Geforce 8600, for as low as around $1550(from GenTech). Suppose u shop around for the best deal, u can even avoid the sales tax.
It looks like a beast at that price range. I am waiting for the review and benchmark. It should have equal power with the new santa rosa G1 if not superior. However, with those 4 turbo jet engines sticking out on the back, i dont expect much battery life from it. Since, i wont go anywhere that i cant plug in, the C90S the way to go!

I voted for May-July
I cannot wait to buy the HP HDX laptop with the latest santa rosa technology and ati's newest graphics card that supports direct x 10.
256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 2600XT -
too bad i bought the Asus A8Js just 3 months back
I could have waited more -
Woah! do you actually find that to be true!? So what your saying is that an x1600 is only a little bit better than the x600, and the 7600gt is only a little bit better than the 6600gt! Your seriously mistaken! Go to Nvidia.com, there you will see what nvidia themselves have said, that the 8600mGT is over double the performance of what it's meant to replace, the go7600GT. Oh, and we've already seen the HD2600m, and it's 3dmark scores are well over twice that of the MRx1600.
Firstly we just all need to wait until the more finalized drivers are out, and secondly, if you didn't already know all of the above, then you obviously don't know much about graphics cards! -
dear unknown55525 ,you cannot believe Nvidia, you need to believe testers and benchmarks.
if 8600m GT would be twice better than 7600GT, than it would be better than 7950GTX, and here we can make conclusion.... nevah(never).

Waiting on new MacBook Pros. Or maybe an iMac actually. Rumor has it Mr. Jobs is going to be doing something, or releasing some this coming week. Probably an announcement of the announcement of the new iMacs. MBP's will be at WWDC.
