I can't wait for these new chips to come out, and I haven't heard any recent news relating to a release date. Anyone hear anything new lately concerning nVidia's plans to release the 8800m cards?

Start looking when nVidia releases the G90 for desktops, 8800M should be around the same date (in other words, expect a holiday release)

I've heard from a trusted source to expect it at the end of this year/early next. So you most likely have some time to wait.

the time when the 7800/7900gtx came out was a perfect time to buy a gamenotebook compared to a gaming desktop. But if i had a choice now for buying a gaming notebook i wouldn't buy one, because now the best gpu for notebook is the "go 7950gtx" and the best desktop gpu is the 8800gtx/ 8800ultra. Those cards are twice as power as the "go 7950gtx".
When the 8800m will be available the 9800 series for desktop will be available too. Those cards could be twice as much (or even more) powerfull as the 8800m. So that's why i'm not interested in a gamenotebook anymore, even if i didn't had one.

There was a recent news article on the boards that said the 8800M had been delayed until Q4 of this year.

It does say COMING SOON. Well, whatta heck, it's high time nVidia released a real enthusiast mobile GPU. If it can work as close as possible as the desktop 8800GTS, I`m all ears and cash for it :D

I agree with Pulsar, I wanted a new gaming notebook, but as he said the new desktop cards will replace the current 8800GTX/Ultra cards and probably be twice as fast, maybe even more. It´s just plain too bad that the notebook scene is always a year after the desktop market.

For me it´s nothing oh wow what kind of performance, since I have already seen that performance and still the cards will be crippled compared to a real 8800GTX/Ultra desktop card. For me there no oh wow anymore, it´s just too bad that they can´t release cards simultanously for both platforms.

Wouldnt it be funny if the 8800m turned out to be the 8700 with higher clocks and a few more stream processors. :D I still find it strange, the timing of this new GPU release. It's not like the 8700 has been out there for long at all, and if they bring out the 8800m before the end of the year, what have they got left to boost mobile GPU sales at the start of 2008?

You would think that they would keep the 8700 flowing till after Christmas, then launch the 8800 to try and drum up sales again. I'm not a business person, but it seems poor business sense to release a product, then release its 'update' soon after before its even had a chance to fully sell. Not to mention the fact that it seems that vendors like Alienware are still trying to get rid of surpluss 7950's.... the mobile GPU line is going to look a tad messy after the 8800.

8400,8600,8700,8800 <<< ---- is it just me or does the 8700 seem out of place/pointless in that lineup?

that's a scary thought but if you look at the facts you'll see that only the 8 series does not have any "gtx" cards...which could make the 8700mgtx possible i suppose...

Interesting. But since the desktop 9xxx cards are not even out yet, im going to assume it will be this time next year (at best) before we start hearing "rumors" of their annoncement for mobile versions. :D

They could discontinue the 8700M all together. I think from a business perspective they were forced to release the 8700m sales of the machines containing these cards might have started to slip, and a new release would've resparked the sales.

Also with the busy back to school laptop rush over summer they probably wanted something heavy to draw sales to these type of notebooks and a new GPU is just the way to do it.

Onlycopunk might score a point there.
Think of it this way, the new 8800GT desktop card smashes the 8800GTS,at 66% of its price, and in some places it performs CLOSE to the 8800GTX The 8800GTS will soon dissapear, due to various renamings and increasingly usage of the G92. Some names will be kept , but for different products, thus burrying the old product and making way for future GPUs. Naming the upcoming video card 8700GTX would not be farfetched, since it still might be an 8700GT with twice the bus(256 this time) and 112 stream processors :D (wishfull thinking),and it would crush the 7950GTX easily.
Or then again, the 8700GTX or 8800M GTX might be a new video card, from a different processor, not the G84,and be just a small improvement over the 8700GT.

My money is on the first option..the new video card must be of a different family than the 8700GT , because it need extra power, one which was not available before...

An 8700m GT with twice the mem bus, better core, and 3x the unified processors is an 8800 card, they would NOT name it an 8700m GTX as it's not just an unlocked card, it IS an 8800GT just in MXM form with power miser.

Come on, this video card HAS to be a 256 bit, otherwise nVidia is digging their grave...there is no enthusiast mobile GPU at this point, and because ati took a long vacation, nvidia has to dominate and release something seriousely powerful.
And as I said, wishful thinking or not, I bet on 80+ stream processors...Anybody else? :D

256 bit bus is probably going to true for the 8800m, since it will probably be the "true" high end 8 series mobile processor. if it doesn't im going out with a rifle...and im not gonna be huntin' wabbits...

It IS a lower clocked direct copy of the 8800GT, the core will be the same, memory will be the same, everything.. just MXM and smaller. They aren't going to release another 8700m card, it would be pointless, how much higher can you OC an 8600m ? !
